Olympics strut

are people no longer down with the Olympics? I personally lost interest around 2000, when the coverage became more packaged and glossy, rather than the old straight up live feed.

At any rate, it is happening now in Rio. Brazil's men's soccer team is imploding like they seem to do at every tournament now, but the women's team are always cool.

Best moment so far by a mile was Rafaela Silva winning Brazil's first gold of the games in judo. Born and raised in the City of God favela (the one from that movie), suffered racist abuse from a bunch of dickheads after a disappointing exit at the 2012 games, bounces back to become the only brazilian judo fighter to be world champion and olympic champion.

above the ioc shitstorm, it's still exciting to watch many of the events.  not for any nationalistic purpose; just to see great athleticism.  swimming has been great this year.

^^^ "Succeed, child, and this is how you diss them."

Bike road-race was pretty grim.  That clog bird, one of the worst stacks I've ever seen.  The kerbs are massive on those roads, surprised she didn't paralyse herself.

Also told by a Japanese person that if a Japanese Judo athlete wins only silver or bronze, he is expected to apologise to the nation.  I can understand tradition, but the reed that does not bend in the wind will break, innit doe.

Shame that most of the headlines are about athletes finger-pointing each other as drug cheats. Legalize all doping and we'd really have an Olympics to remember.

If you have a vpn to spoof a UK IP address the BBC have about 8 live feeds you can watch. Most pleasing

the local sports channel SporTV is boasting 17 channels of continuous coverage. I spend the day flipping between events and seeing fuck all happen.

By the time we get to Tokyo it's going to all be streamed in 8K. But yeah, lots of content not a lot of action is the downside to streams. The BBC seem to filter it a bit, generally only showing events that are happening. It's not quite slow tv, definitely a slower experience. It's cool to be able to see the best other nations have, as the edited coverage generally focuses only on GB sports people. I wanted to watch some Judo but the UK dude was boring as hell (no points scored, went out on 3 yellow cards for lack of attack), I wanted to see some grandmaster in beast mode.

  • It's been interesting this time. I don't have a country to root for anymore really, having links to three countries, and always find myself rooting for the underdog. In this case, man, Brazil themselves are the biggest underdog.

I must say the BBC's 22 feeds is pretty much... a million percent better than NBC "delay michael phelps till primetime even though it happened four hours ago" ad-filled crap. I have been watching the BBC main feed that wanders between stuff and it's been good, but it's fun to dive into live feeds of the rugby sevens dudes picking their butts between matches or whatever with no commentary. Reminds me of my bad old days working in TV sports and having to scroll through massive unedited satellite feeds.

Anybody watching handball again for the first time in exactly four years?

So far, there's 3 groups of problems.

    1. The whole IOC mess.
Russian state systematic doping, lack of balls to totally clothesline them; continuing with football, golf, rugby, tennis - honestly, fuck the fuck off. It's all got a bit too FIFA, nahmsayin?

    2. Brazil-centric issues.
The protests, economic downturn there. Poor courses for rowing and cycling. The flotilla turds and sofas.
The empty seats. So far, no-one really set the action on fire. Gymnast dudes falling off the apparatus, finger pointing at druggies blah blah blah.

    3. UK-centric issues. Time zone not optimal. Feels like a comedown after 2012. UK seemingly getting 4th places here too often. Old stars (Mo, Jess, Daley, Louis gymnast etc) all gone a bit Hollywood with TV ads, tatts, ponytails, and too ubiquitous (see also Bolt). Poor TV coverage - Balding is very grating. Rubbish pundits - Beth Tweddle with bingo wings ffs. Summers ending here too.

Hoping it gets better when track n field starts.

  • I basically think about doping in almost every event I watch, except women's gymnastics during which I think about age cheating. It's not going away - seems to me we need three sets of games - Olympics, Paralympics, and Dopelympics. I wanna see Usain Bolt run 100m in 6 seconds, fuck it. It's not that it's moral to endorse what is basically destructive cheating, but separating the two and giving dopers their time to shine would help with the whole "competing against honest athletes" problem.

And you're right that Brazil has no business hosting this event given their political and economic situation, and it really needs to become less of a multi-billion national pride white elephant construction hell if they wanna keep holding it in different places.

I personally can't believe they didn't get Iron Mike down there to open the games with Gisele.

The "Honest" althletes would still cheat.  Like in veteran amateur road bike racing, where there is nothing at stake other than pride, folls are doping.

Not doing Brazil's reputation of being a busted ass country any favours that. Who runs an Olympic swimming pool and doesn't chlorinate it.

I have not clocked Beth Tweddle of late and now no longer need to do so.

Bingo-wings on one so young and previously athletic.  She must have ordered her own Geoff Capes weight in kebabs the day she retired.

we just got our first gold.  (the summer games are not generally our strength...)  this 16 y.o. Penny chick.from Toronto tied for a gold in the 100m free.  and she's already won a silver and two bronze!

  • I was at work with nothing to do all day yesterday, pretty much for the first and (I imagine) last time in my life in this particular career, and there was a TV in the room so I watched the olympics all day. All day, rowing dudes, rowing women, in a straight line. Very meditative. Thought about doping less than in swimming, weightlifting, cycling etc. for some reason.

Also skel's got a good point in his mind-stream shit about 'pan-man gymnasts. Dudes looked like boy idols. How did I get through so many olympics not knowing their team was so strong either??

I've been to Rio two times and have spent two weeks there, but I have never been to the Barra de Tijuca neighborhood or region where all these games are being played. A lot of the gringos living in Rio live in the luxury apartments in the area. I did lots of research and couldn't find any places worth taking the long bus ride.   The Sitio Ricardo Burle Marx seemed interesting but I didn't feel like spending two hours on a bus and the BRT system that was just built and not exactly running smoothly in order to get out there.

This is off-topic to the Tissot, but what sport?  Pool or gym-based?

Props to her booty for NGAF about the confines of that outfit.
