Rooney's international career is surely over - his legs have gone. He can't last more than 30 mins, in the second half he lost possession every time the ball came near him, looked like a 45 year old pub player on a liquid lunch.
Kane's set pieces too. Who the fuck told him he's good, and why wasn't he dragged off earlier?
here in Brazil we refer to what Joe Hart did as "lettuce hands"
the whole thing kind of reminds of when Brazil was knocked out by Honduras in the 2001 Copa America. You guys should take heart that the following year Brazil went on to win the World Cup. Nothing embarrassing has happened since and everything is rosy with the national team now.
It just adds to the sense of disaster and chaos. i know it might sound like I'm making excuses for the England team, but I'm sure the referendum didn't help their concentration. These guys are rich, they probably lost money on the markets, are wondering if they'll be allowed to play for continental club teams, and what kind of world it will be if Bozza Johnson is in charge.
I remember years ago before tiki taka became all the rage I was watching some young team, the German U21s maybe, and they'd play their way around defenses and out of tight situations using small triangles of players. That simply requires a sense of finding space and letting the ball do the work with quick passes. It doesn't need to a Spanish total football level approach to passing, just the ability to pull it off when necessary. The Icelandic team utilised it against us the other day. But somehow, with all the great players and millions of pounds in the PL the English national side still can't understand this most basic of footballing premises. English football whatever it once was, in a tactical sense is utterly dead. If a country with the population of Leicester is more capable and adaptable it's time to recognise that and try and rebuild something from the ashes. That or don't pick so many bottling Spud players (although I thought Eric Dyer was probably our best player in the tournament).
Talking of dead things. I just watched a Guardian live stream discussion on life after Brexit. There seemed to be a fair amount of support for a new form of leftwing party, something that stepped away from the neoliberalism of the Blair era but that the old Labour movement was effectively done. but we're talking about a 10/15/20 year project here. How they're going to re-engage those forgotten labour heartland constituents I'm not sure, but I like the idea put forward of a system more like the united states of Britain, where each area had more governance and direct influence and contact with the ruling parties. That way hopefully people could feel less disconnected from what goes on in Westminster and there would seem more possibility of accountability. One of the speakers made the point that it is important for the Left to reconnect with a stronger sense of Britishness otherwise like in the Brexit that void will be completely filled by rightwing voices, particularly financial Nationalists. I like the idea that this vote could bring up the possibility of real change. Although hearing the Gove, his wife and Boris are already making deals with Murdoch and Co, it hard not to be pretty defeatist about it all.
I can't see how Labour will ever get in again now that Scotland is out of the equation. There just aren't enough seats in the North to make any vote count Nationally. You have to sell some kind of socialism to the "I'm all right, Jack" south, where it rains money and beggar and beggar line the skreets (sic) waiting for a crust of bread to pass tru. The mentality that brought us Brexit will contract the wealth all the way back to the City unless something drastic happens.
The more that I see, the less I believe
The barbed wire fences have replaced all the trees
The houses of God are full of sinners every week
Praying for forgiveness for those they leave to bleed
And they keep telling me, it's not my concern
But when petrol bombs fly, when cars overturn
When your see children cry because the cities are burning
Who's gonna show concern
Belfast's only half an hour away (Belfast)
Close your eyes but it won't go away (Belfast)
Belfast's only half an hour away (Belfast)
Belfast's only half an hour away (Belfast)
But the more that I see, the less I believe
Like countries split in two through religion, tradition, and greed
The devil's passed his hand those who have soultions
And those like me too ignorant to find my own conclusions
Is that what they're telling me, it's not my concern
But when I see children crying 'cause that's all they can do
They are crying for help and they're looking at you
What are you supposed to do?
Belfast's only half an hour away (Belfast)
Close your eyes but it won't go away (Belfast)
Belfast's only half an hour away (Belfast)
Belfast's only half an hour away (Belfast)
The governing powers are confused, the armies becoming bemused
Another bomb becomes defused and the terrorists aren't amused
Paisley is getting his shirt off, Sein Fien are going insane
They strike to divide the countryside but the borderline remains
Another attack leaves a widow in black, grieving for brereaved
Another kid with a brick gets shot in the back and gets left on the pavement to bleed
And they keep telling me, it's not my concern
It's not my concern, it's not my concern
Belfast's only half an hour away (Belfast)
Close your eyes but it won't go away (Belfast)
Belfast's only half an hour away (Belfast)

Well the other thing the left desperately need is proportional representation. If we are going to have a fairer system of governance, which is apparently what this Brexit vote was partially about, the whole thing needs an overhaul tbh. Instead what we'll likely get is more of the same Tory mess led by backroom unelected elites, tax rises, public spending cuts, recession, and a rise in racist attacks on the streets of England as frustration over the lack of promised Brexit changes grows.
Well the other thing the left desperately need is credible leadership that appeals to its natural audience, not just the rich Islington elite and student politicos stuck in an 80s smash the system time warp

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was addressing in a less hyperbolic fashion above above.
Not sure what their 'natural audience' is any more though. The Union member filled Northern industrial towns that were Labour heartlands are also things of the past. The Blair years led them to be overly dependant on welfare and the Torys cut that welfare leaving them lost. How do you re-engage those people in a time of recession? The current Left wing answer is more public spending, whereas the Right's answer is more of the same, but 'blame deh immigrants'.
Okem said:...the Torys cut that welfare leaving them lost. How do you re-engage those people in a time of recession?
I was there. Barring mad subsidies for car plants and such, there will never be industrial work in those towns again. Until they stop setting the tanks on their own folk, it's cheaper to get it from China. The end. They will have to live where low-paid unskilled work allows them to have a standard of living above the one they have in the UK. In the same way Eastern euromang came here since like forever. My best mate at school, all his family were Lithuanians that came over in the 20s. That kind of upheaval seems alien to Brits, but that is where it is.
Like St*ve said, you'll never get a vote telling the truth. But that is the elephant in the room - There is nothing we can do other than keep them ticking over on benefits subsidised by the financial services we have in Ye Olde Londonne town. I really see no fix for this, the industrialists have the government in dey pockets. Anyone that says things are going to get better for joblessman without taxing the rich more is lying.

The current left wing are a total irrelevance. In fact it becomes increasingly clear that SNP might be the only effective opposition atm.
The left seem intent on continuing a narrative of Tory Scum, Blairite, Muslim/Jew/Syria/Palestine, war crime. Do any of you seriously think this echo chamber 6th form bollocks amongst a hundred thousand activists and the Islington £2m lounge luvvie Trotskyite posers speaks anything to dude in Sittingbourne, Grimsby, Stoke, Rotherham? Why the fuck did UKIP steal the left's votes? Right wing media bias? Please. Dudes in those towns know this: the importing of 'skilled labour' to make up for 'skills shortage' meant only that the lacking skills were to work more for less. And that only benefits big business. Cost cut = share price rise = CEO bonus increase. It don't benefit dude in town. Does the left care about this? If they do, they have a strange way of showing it. Their current malaise displays a total dereliction of duty to the most battered of our potential workforce. Shame on Corbynista and them.
Was watching the match in bed last night with Mrs. J and laughing to myself.

The SNP have a great uniting force of Nationalism that doesn't rely on xenophobia. Again, this is something the Left really needs to reengage with. But they also need a leader who's not a complete non entity.
As I said, there is a growing sense that the Labour movement is dead. The Left needs to redefine itself, hopefully without fracturing into small non entities. But there's no reason why it can't appeal to Northern working classes and have a foreign policy that respects human rights. This whole divided country narrative is true to a point, but it has been stoked up by UKIP and Leave as a vote winner. Millions of people in the North and across the country voted Remain, not just London and some hyperthetical elite. There are Northern Labour MPs and candidates who understand the plight of their communities better than most, it's what they have to offer them that's lacking.
The issues facing struggling communities across the UK aren't easy fix problems. Blair's government did some good but not nearly enough, then the financial crisis followed by Tory austerity cut them further adrift. UKIP offered an easy fix - blame the immigrants, blame the EU. But is Brexit actually going to fix any of their issues? Nope. Again we're back to empty rhetoric and broken promises.
With an old style Union movement workers could (hopefully) see firsthand the benefits of Socialism in the workplace, so when it came to voting the choice was obvious. But with the modern work force, where is that benefit actually going to be seen? In times of global economies, economic migrants and offshoring how do you ACTUALLY protect the worker, not just pretend to represent them in order to win votes. How does a Labour government protect the workers whilst staying competitive, 'encouraging bisness' and protecting the financial sector which fills our coffers? Without being immediately torn apart by the rightwing as financial suicide, how do you sell a Socialist based economic system that promises real change for those who've seen mass unemployment since 2009, in a concise and attractive enough fashion to compete with the easy answers UKIP were offering? You can't. Because one side is dealing with reality, whilst the other is simply looking to win the populist vote on a single issue.
Corbyn wasn't the Labour leader at the last election, so we can't really put the blame lost seats at his door. Not that he's done anything since taking over to sway anybody's vote though. If we look at his historic record on the EU you can see why he's been so sheepish of late. He voted in favour of leaving the European Economic Community in 1975. He voted against the Maastricht Treaty that created the EU. He voted against the Lisbon Treaty, which is the current constitutional basis for the EU. The dude has been a backbench rebel his entire life and now calls for unity even though he himself doesn't personally align with where his party stands. It's no srise that they're in a mess.
The level of the exprofeshional pundit is possibly a good insight into why English football has achieved so little in the past decades. These are apparently the trusted voices of the senior generation and most of them struggle to string together a coherent sentence.
