I dunno if I see it that way. He looks kinda like a regular guy who is good with computers, but also takes some care in what he wears. He looks 'smart'.

I can't get down with most of it, personally, but it suits him.

How about seemingly cool dudes talking about tv soap operas like secretaries in the break room?

If secretaries in your place of work discuss True Detective in the break room, I'd love to come work there.

Ha ha. Don't let my positive, joyful demeanor fool you. I can be a much bigger dick than most when pushed. I'm a resourceful motheryouknowwhat and I'm not afraid to pull out shit you wish people had forgotten about. Allllsss I'm sayin' is...you don't have to try so hard to reaffirm your assholishness every. single. time. You're like a parody now. Lighten up, holmes! Who knows? Maybe being a more decent person will help alleviate your unhappiness!

With that said...go take a nap.

Nope, not it. It's not so much confined to women, but they are certainly the masters of the top40 trade, always ever so willing to speak extensively over mainstream mind-rubs.

Yes, I get that True Detective and Breaking Bad, and The Wire before those are a higher breed of entertainment from the traditional soap opera. But again, y'all have taken on the practice of secretaries from the 70's in getting so involved in discussing television programming outside of the home.

    I mean, it's not like it's football.

Right, I play up certain things on this board for entertainment sake. And you sir, have become a rival of mine in the game of playful opposites. I know I give you a ton of shit on here, but it's not really serious.

And I'm not unhappy in the slightest. Where do you even get that? You really should stick to the topic/jokes at hand instead of interpreting this shit to be the result of something actually lacking in my real life.

All that being said, I'll take a gilded marshmallow with that purple gumdrop. Thank you very much.

I think there's more envy than meanness in this thread. I mean, dudes spend days posting on that shoe/sneakers thread only to see a dapper lumberjack featured on a fashion blog.

I think Hemol deserves a feature on that blog though, so he can keep quietly shitting on the Strut.

dont remind me how long of a wait that's gonna be (trade rumors and contract restructuring just isn't doing it for me).

my Niners shit the bed in spectacular fashion for a 3rd yr in a row, and I (and the nation) was forced to watch Macklemore win the super bowl. I'll discuss ANYTHING that can keep my mind off football for the next 2-3 months.

but srsly True Detective is a great show.

The irony is that unless you're a lot older than I think you are--that is, unless you're old enough to have been working office jobs in the 1970s--your conception of this phenomenon has likely been formed entirely by shit you've seen on television.

    It''s like you're reading a script from a 2014 show parodying 1970s stereotypes...a show I would not watch.

Nope, my mom worked as a secretary for a stretch in the 70's and I would be in and out of her office quite a bit. And I used to spend a good amount of time in my dad's office during the 70's as well. I just have a good memory.

This was the look when I moved to Oregon in 1977.
The 2 on the right represent the way it has always been here.
In the 70s we tucked in our cotton western shirts, they went out of style for a few decades, and the untucked look is in.

Facial hair used to be optional.

    I stand corrected.

That actually kinda makes it worse, though. I mean, it's one thing to be an adult and have retained some traces of the kind of second-hand cultural parroting that we all engage in as kids--glimpsing the faraway lands of tv, movies, rap tapes, whatever, and then mimicking their behaviors--but to be an adult and to honestly still feel that way? To not only still have but to still actively claim as yours that kind of flat, cartoonish, and sorta disparaging view of actual people that you met in real life, that you actually knew? That's really sorta something else.

As if the women accountants currently in my office aren't constantly blabbing away just like the secretaries of yore...

It's weird to me because on the internet, you say something different and people automatically assume it came from a website or tv show that they just haven't yet checked for and expect you to provide a link. It's like the concept of experiencing things first hand and formulating opinions off of those real things is completely lost on an entire generation or so of people.

But yeah, back at my dad's office there was always tons of hard liquor and tons of nudie magazines. So the stereotypes work both ways. It's just that we've demonized the word stereotype so much that we forget that they have many truths to them. You just don't go misapply them is all.

I've noticed the same thing here, at least to a degree. A lot of the kitchen staff dudes and bar doormen and such who sport the newish lumberjack beard look are still fairly mannish as far as I can tell. But there is this whole other contingent of littler dudes who tend to wear colorful wife-beater style shirts which overexpose their ultra-pasty skin and they've literally got fairy boots on....smh.

Well, for the record, I was actually kinda trying to throw you a rope when I implied that you might have inherited these opinions from tv. That seemed preferable to just letting stand the idea that a smart guy like you is sincerely invested in such two-dimensional chauvinist bullshit.

    But, I mean, stuff like
As if the women accountants currently in my office aren't constantly blabbing away just like the secretaries of yore...
and your cockeyed idea that the long-romanticized image of men as hard-drinking porn-perusers somehow offsets the long-demonized image of women as chattering "top 40" drones?

No doubt. I think often of the "dressed by the internet" paradigm that he used to rail against, and which has become so inescapable.
