i dont wrestle with white guilt ever. i constantly wrestle with the fact that shitty things happen to undeserving people every single day, music awards being the very least of them.

And until just now, no one here has been discussing white guilt.

    The topic is white privilege.

i think the association between "white guilt" and "the grammys" is petty, yes.

when i watch a documentary about how the NCAA ensures that young black athletes have to sign contracts stating that old white men can ruin their life if they dont work for free i dont for a second associate myself with the latter. i feel absolutely gutted for those effected, but why should i feel guilty?

invoking "white guilt", a term so inextricably linked to abominable human rights infractions when talking about some corn ball selling out more than his peers is insane.

it's a dude i've never met, and never have, playing both sides and capitalizing off of NUMEROUS visible minority groups to vault himself into personal success. that has nothing to do with me.

^^^This post is like everything I hate about a Macklemore song all rolled into one. Too much tear-jerking and claiming to be risen above it.

Sheesh. I need to go wash myself clean now.

Herm out here being petty as fuck

Chal??. He took a jab so I took one too, with a fact that was related to the topic this thread devolved to. I keep shit like that in my pocket 'til fools get lippy with me. If I remember correctly you used to poke some fun at that fact back in the day too. (For the record, I never involved myself with that 'til now.)

    Fuck it though.

Oh, Herm. You gonna go in on something I did at 11 next now that you've covered 21?

Over 20 years ago, dude. Different times.

get over yourself and stop blaming other people for your shortcomings.

could you possibly try to be more "down" with a group that doesnt want you?

From NYT's Caramanica, a man once mentioned in song by the white Action Bronson:

So when Macklemore bests Mr. Lamar ??? and Jay Z, Drake and Kanye West ??? for a rap award, he makes sure that he kisses the ring. ???I robbed you??? is a strikingly powerful phrase in this context: a white artist???s muscling into a historically black genre, essentially uninvited, and taking its laurel. In a nutshell, this is the entire cycle of racial borrowing in an environment of white privilege: black art, white appropriation, white guilt, repeat until there???s nothing left to appropriate.

To many, that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were nominated in the rap categories at all was an affront. Hip-hop purists love a good debate about boundaries and who gets to police them. (Almost certainly, Macklemore was one of those purists, until he couldn???t be anymore because of his fame.) Last week, The Associated Press reported that the two were almost eliminated from competition in those categories altogether by subcommittee members who felt that they were, in essence, too pop ??? and, presumably, too white. Like a border militia tasked with passing judgment on infiltrators, those voters attempted a sort-of Grammy version of jury nullification, to no avail.

The idea was, of course, preposterous. Part of accepting hip-hop???s growth into a pop music juggernaut is accepting that its edges are fuzzier than they once were. ???The Heist??? is undeniably a hip-hop album, though Macklemore???s songs have more in common with those by rappers like Flo Rida or Pitbull, dance-music-friendly artists rarely heard on traditional hip-hop radio. But Flo Rida and Pitbull are not white.

Bey's booty and Stevie Wonder playing with Daft Punk. Those were my personal highlights.

Bey's booty has gotten so much air time, it was no thing to see it one more time (you can say that a la Daft Punk if you so wish). It made me uncomfortable watching those two on stage....and not in the same way it makes me feel funny on the inside watching the electricity and heat between the real Ike and Anna Mae when they performed on the same stage. More like watching bad forced performance art ??? like that Picasso Baby disaster. Honestly, that beat for Drunk is so good, and her singing which is basically her running through her mindgarden catalogue of sultry is campy, annoying as fuck and just gets in the way. It???s like l am trying to see something on the tv screen and she???s standing in the way. I move to the left there she is singing on the left, I move to the right, there she is in front of me on the right. Get out of the way!

I loved the Daft Punk, Stevie, Chic performance and fully appreciate Stevie's non lip sync'ed voice cracking. The audience's awkward awful dancing was awful and awkward.

Also ??? dress of the evening:

I wonder what Rahsaan Patterson is thinking about all this.

Some people love to talk about how homoantagonistic black popular culture is, particularly rap and r&b, but I have this theory that part of the reason - if not the main reason - gay rap and r&b performers choose to stay closeted is that they worry it'll be the only thing they get asked about for the rest of their careers.

Conversely, I remember once reading an interview with Gary Burton wherein he observed that nobody ever asked him about his sexuality. He said something like, "Everyone always wants to talk about the music, which is great, but sometimes I think 'how come nobody ever wants to know what it's like being a gay jazz musician?'"

Oh, and shout out to Roc Marci for his sterling contribution to the "utter dick/great artist" paradox.

I can't say the first thing I think is gay spokesperson! when I think of Frank Ocean, but he does occur to me given his (Grammys) journey, and that he lives it while Macklemore gets congratulated for it.

And maybe a three-way face melt, too? - Macklemore into Miley (same haircuts) into Justin Beaver (who looks like Cyrus sans face-paint anyway).

I heard a good interview with comedian AL Madrigal back when Thrift Shop was getting popular. He made the point that only well off people would think thrift shopping is "cool". He said he grew up poor and had to wear thrift shop clothes and would never do that again if he could avoid it. It seems fun when you have options but if it's your only choice it's not so fun.

    I've been reading all this.
    I watched a little.
I am not up on new music or artist, so I defend no one.

But there is nothing new about white rappers.
Doesn't the strut still ride for the Beastie Boys?

Is the hate because he is a white rapper?
Or is it because his music is popshlock?

And he's totally disingenuous. Goodness knows he's not the only one, but right now, he's the one who is breaking his back trying to look like something that he clearly isn't - humbled, selfless and kicking against the pricks.

Does "pop some tags" mean he's switching prices or stealing shit from the thrift store? That part confuses me.

The store, Value Village, where the video for that hard ass rapp was filmed is on my evening neighborhoodwalk locationlist. My ex-girlfriend says it smells like diesel fuel (um no, bitch, it's creosote). I never find anything in there, but I still visit regularly. Just to spite her.

I don't really know Macklemore's story, but he seems too old. And are you sure he's from Seattle? Because I've never heard anyone other than some no-phonk-having Brittmans call the Value Village a "thrift shoppe." Ayo bruv dingdonger at the thrifts innit. They're sometimes "thrift stores," but I swear they're most commonly called "secondhand stores" here. "Value Village" is kinda the Escalator Kleenex of them too.

Am I completely not knowing the Whyte Ledge here by not talmbout the socio-political-racialistic ramifications? The only thing that seems noteworthy to me is I'm still hearing this conversation. Once it stops, rapps dies, right?

Rap music really works best from the bottom up. Always has. I guess the underdog thing I can root for with these guys is they're keeping all their money.

But srslytho who gives a fuck about a goddamn Grammy?

I think it would've been easier for everybody if Jethro Tull woulda took it.

Posse On Broadway though. Boom. I'm good.

ADDENDUM: I'm definitely not comfortable with the Seahawks/Macklemore/Seattleizm right now. I'm having a hard time.

I didn't realize you've listened to his albums.

For the record, I haven't. Not a single one. I've never even heard "Same Love" in its' entirety. I've only heard "Thrift Shop," that sneakerhead song and that "hands up!" song and I would not classify either of those as "really, really bad," dude. (Sneakerhead one is a little corny though, but the sentiment is cool.)
