Casteneda, pretty killer list right there...you gotta put in an uncool album too! No limp bizkit bro?
Hey thanks man! Haha, no Limp Bizkit for me.
I like your list too...Thought of putting Alice Coltrane "Journey" album as well on my list, as that album blew me away when I initially heard it and spent a good year listening to it repeatedly.
Curtis Mayfield ???There???s No Place Like America Today???
Probably my favorite Curtis record. Pulled it out just now and forgot how good it is.
the Curtis Live! backlash has begun.
That's funny you mentioned "Curtis/Live!" as initially I had that on my list, then changed it to "There's No Place Like America Today" after more thought...Those are my two favorite Curtis albums, with "Superfly" and "Curtis" after those two.
I gave this a quick stab but I already see so many obvious oversights that I want to redo it (no Prince records?). I made sure not to use any compilations, that feels like cheating...

I don't know if it's the Hendrix record for everyone, but it's the one I go back to the most after spending 30+ years listening to Hendrix. I prefer the earthier, funkier playing on BOG to the psychedelic style of the studio records. Not that they aren't great, but I rarely go for them. Probably over-exposure related as well.

Incredible. Sat here for a minute thinking about this and the first ones that sprang into my head were albums by Dean Martin, The Carpenters, Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren, Lamont Dozier and Earth, Wind & Fire. I'm more of a MOR child of the 70s than I ever imagined.
A few minutes later I'm thinking Tom Petty, ABC, Anita Baker, Television, Outkast ....so it's creeping 80s to 90s.
Since internet in the 00s ( late adopter) it's all been about finding individual tracks for me, from blogs, mixes, and also from VG+ & Waxidermy Swap Cds.
I haven't genuinely cathected with an album, start to finish, for ten years, but could reel off dozens of amazing individual tracks ( to my ears anyway) I now couldn't imagine living without.
Good to see Steel Pulse in there with the True Democracy LP - a really underrated record.

1. Wolfgang Dauner???s Et Cetera ??? ???Live???
2. Allen Toussaint ??? ???Southern Nights???
3. Bill Withers: ???+Justments???
4. Steve Kuhn - "S/T" on Cobblestone
5. Jorge Ben ??? ???Africa-Brasil???
6. Earth Wind and Fire ??? ???S/T???
7. Brian Auger ??? ???Second Wind???: although this album has numerous and serious deficiencies (like god awful lyrics and questionable lead guitar work) I love it anyways. robbie mcintosh murders the drum kit.
8. Sonic Youth ??? ???Sister???: but Daydream is a close second.
9. Steely Dan ???Gaucho???:
10. Embryo: ???Rocksession???
11. Freddie Hubbard ??? ???Red Clay???: although First Light follows not that far behind). So what if it is CTI.
12. Steel Pulse ??????True Democracy???
13. Michael Franks ???the Art of Tea???
14. Sly Stone ???Fresh: this was discussed recently and I decided to revisit. It edges out ???Riot??? for me based on the production and drums alone.
15. Max Roach - "Members Don't Git Weary"
16. Pat Martino ??? ???Desperado???: my favourite prestige record and pat is in his toppest form
17. McDonald and Giles
18. Bob Seger ??? ???Ramblin Gamblin Man???: It took a lot of prodding by fellow strutteurs to get me to even Czech this out. I just thought of him as being the dude who sang the refrain ???like a rock??? in those older ford ads. I now make it a habit of picking up a copy every time I come across a cheap one just so I can give it to friends.
19. Lenny Breau and Chet Atkins- ???Standard Brands???
20. Cortijo and His Time Machine ??? Strutteur recommended and hooked this up some years ago and I just love the bugged out, electronic vibe. Sui Generis.
21. Isley Brothers ??? ???Go for Your Guns???
22. Fugazi ??? ???Repeater???
23. Bemibem

27. Minnie Ripperton ??? ???Adventures in Paradise???
28. Oliver Nelson ??? ???Stolen Moments???
29. Johnny Hammond ??? ???Gears???: was trying to think of my favourite mizell bros record and this might be it. I know it???s another WoF 95 pick but hey, I???m a little dude.

34. Frank Foster ??? ???The Loud Minority???: my favourite Mainstream release.
35. Joni Mitchell- ???Heijra???
36. Talking Heads ??? ???Remain in Light???: not sure how this missed the soulstrut 100.
37. Parliament ??? ???Funkentelechy???: edges out ???Mothership Connection??? by a nose (d???void of funk)
38. Catalyst ??? ???Perception??? ??? although I think all of their albums are worth seeking out, there is something even extra special about this one, it may be the addition of doc pat Gleeson (who does a much better job than he did on those herbie albums)
39. Fela ??? ???Shakara???
40. Curtis Mayfield ??? ???Back to the World???
41. Leonard Cohen: ???I???m You???re Man???
42. .Piano Choir ??? ???Handscapes 2???: I enjoy ???summit??? or ???conclave??? jazz albums but instead of being a cutting contest, these dudes really listening to each other closely and playing real real nice. check out ???power of a smile??? or ???Barbara ann???. too bad the first volume was recorded so poorly.
43. John Coltrane ??? ???Coltrane??? (the blue one on impulse): I like all his stuff until the mid to late 60???s free period but this is the one for me. ???Soul Eyes??? was a gateway drug.

I celebrate the catalogs of some artists (e.g. Neil Young, Led Zepp, Pink Floyd) who still, to these ears, failed to record an LP that was 100% playable straight through (mostly due to overexposure of certain songs), thus their omission.

Off the top, these are albums that have been regularly visited since, like, I knew better.
Miles Davis - '58 Sessions, 1964: The Complete Concert, In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk, Complete, Tutu. The other Miles stuff has moments of course but I love the hardbop stuff.
John Coltrane - Giant Steps, A Love Supreme, Bahia. You know what he does.
Pharoah Sanders - Live (1982). So hard the bop.
Joe Henderson - Mode for Joe, Double Rainbow : The Music of Jobim
Michael Jackson - Off The Wall
TCQ - Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders
Main Source - Splitting Atoms
Michael Franks - The Art of Tea, Tiger In The Rain, Abandoned Garden, One Bad Habit
Donny Hathaway - Live (1972)
Eliane Elias - Dreamer, Illusions, Something For You : Bill Evans, Cross Currents, and the new Chet Baker tribute is very good too. I think she's my favourite pianist at the 'mo.
Gonzalo Rubalcaba - Live in Havana (1986). Boy. Keys-melter. Horacio Hernandez is outrageous.
Chick Corea - Akoustic Band and Live at the Blue Note Tokyo, where Vinnie Colaiuta deps for Dave Weckl.
Jaco Pastorius - S/T and Word of Mouth.
Herbie Hancock - The Prisoner, Speak Like A Child, Thrust, Headhunters, Maiden Voyage, I also like River : The Joni Letters for Norah Jones' take on "Court and Spark".
Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves The Sunshine, In The Dark, and the Live at Ronnie Scotts sets are good with the late Zach Breaux on guitar.
Dee Dee Bridgewater - Love and Peace.
Joni Mitchell - Hejira, Shadows and Light (Live).
Georg Levin - Can't Hold Back.
Brian Auger - Complete Live Oblivion
Beady Belle - Cewbeagappic
Frank Zappa - Does Humor Belong In Music, Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar
That's about 50? Throw in some Motorhead, Lizzy, Slayer, Death Angel, Heaven 17, AtJazz, Incognito, JD73, Anita Baker, Frank Sinatra w. Jobim, Weather Report, Masters At Work remixes...

edit:: ha.. it really does look like an 18 year old version of me just wrote that list.. I HAVE BOUGHT OTHER ALBUMS SINCE I SWEAR, HONESTLY I'VE GOT MATURE TASTE, I LIKE MILES DAVIS AND STUFF TOO
i've been avoiding this thread like the plague based on my distaste for music lists, but i have to admit that i've seen some really interesting choices in here, and from people who's musical tastes i've learned to trust. of course there are the also people throwing certain names into the mix to seemingly get their status up.
i'm going to spend some time thinking about this, but i dont think i could promise 50 definitive answers, nor could i put them in ANY kind of order.
Yea, I started and gave up. Might be topic burn out, especially in light of the SStrut 100 list coming to an end very soon. Always fun to see other people's lists though...
Maybe we can do one for 45s soon, maybe theme it out.
Ideas, I got like four of them.
of course there are the also people throwing certain names into the mix to seemingly get their status up.
HOW DARE YOU, SIR! I actually genuinely love that Motley Crue album.
it's these choices that i will ALWAYS believe to be authentic.
if you dont have ONE personal association, good or bad, with a motley crue song you've misspent your time.
"kickstart my heart" is everything beautifully hedonistic and completely insane about being a human being in audio form, but i dont feel the need to qualify it to myself as this because as it turns out i just like to do dumb shit to loud stupid music.

I believe I have waxed poetic about this very song on teh Facebooks. Shit makes me want to drive a tank through a wall at a million miles an hour then explode like a star going supernova. On cocaine.

Hey thanks man! Haha, no Limp Bizkit for me.
I like your list too...Thought of putting Alice Coltrane "Journey" album as well on my list, as that album blew me away when I initially heard it and spent a good year listening to it repeatedly.
That's funny you mentioned "Curtis/Live!" as initially I had that on my list, then changed it to "There's No Place Like America Today" after more thought...Those are my two favorite Curtis albums, with "Superfly" and "Curtis" after those two.

Every time I pass an Olive Garden that joint is packed.

I celebrate the catalogs of some artists (e.g. Neil Young, Led Zepp, Pink Floyd) who still, to these ears, failed to record an LP that was 100% playable straight through (mostly due to overexposure of certain songs), thus their omission.

edit:: ha.. it really does look like an 18 year old version of me just wrote that list.. I HAVE BOUGHT OTHER ALBUMS SINCE I SWEAR, HONESTLY I'VE GOT MATURE TASTE, I LIKE MILES DAVIS AND STUFF TOO
i'm going to spend some time thinking about this, but i dont think i could promise 50 definitive answers, nor could i put them in ANY kind of order.
Maybe we can do one for 45s soon, maybe theme it out.
Ideas, I got like four of them.
HOW DARE YOU, SIR! I actually genuinely love that Motley Crue album.
1st Motley Cru album Livewire 4 Life.
Probably should have been on my list.
Metallica Master of Puppets as well.
And the first side of this New Orleans classic...
it's these choices that i will ALWAYS believe to be authentic.
if you dont have ONE personal association, good or bad, with a motley crue song you've misspent your time.
On cocaine.
the quintessential answer to the proverbial question posed by our founders: "do'est thou even jubilate?"

Only 48... I'm sure I forgot some shit but ok, from here on we partially enter the area of guilty pleasures I'm blasting in the gym or on the terrace when the neighbor thinks he has pull out his Bob Marley. Hell, I know no shame, these have been on heavy rotation for the last couple of years:
