JT finally (finally!) bringing sexy back

What? The Strut has forgotten all about JT the singer? Can't believe it's been over six years since his last album - this is no Cry Me A River or My Love but it still sounds decent enough to me and is "A Grower".

What say people? The Jay cameo is forgettable but not Umbrella or Crazy In Love offensive and doesn't detract from the positive vibes emanating from within. I'd also like to believe that JT may be the one artist left able to focus Timbaland into delivering something other than turd and this is promising if not yet delivering on that. Anyone left on here who will ride for the best bits of the first two albums?

Also, as chance would have it, Destiny's Child also released a new song over the weekend though on first listen it sounded like a forgettable album track off Kaleidoscope so haven't revisited.

  • That Jay Z cameo just reeks of marketing but the song is pretty nice. I dig it.

i like the production...vocals are meh...

The trousersnake's appeal has never been about the vocals themselves though, it's the stellar quality of the production he sources that is the real pull. His work with both the Neptunes and Timberland is up there with the best stuff they've done IMHO.

I can't deny though that I'm hoping he progresses again with this album and brings another name into the mix, Mike Will Made It would seem like the logical choice as he's already dabbling with R&B.

GF, agree that the Jay cameo is unnecessary but it could be a whole lot worse.

More fun beach vibes than sexy. I want smoldering embers not pink champagne bubbles!
It's nice and yes, to repeat it, Jay-Z appearance has no added value.

  • this track does zero for me. very late period jackson 5 without the hooks. also, some of the samples are overchurned like the harp glissando. if it becomes a hit it will be on the strength of the marketing.

True, true, I must confess that I basically just wanted to revisit the whole horrendous sexy back line of newspaper headlines. However I'm personally hopeful that the singles will follow the logic of the previous two albums and the poppy upbeat first release will be followed by something with a bit a more smoulder to it.
I'm also still relieved that it doesn't sound anything like Timbo's solo albums.

I think it's OK. I reckon his vocals sound pretty good, as it goes. It isn't as strong as some of his earlier singles, and the track's a bit too light to really sustain those chopped-and-screwed affectations. I agree that the Jay cameo just seems like plain ol' marketing, an attempt at elevating it into An Event (along with the "open letter"), although it doesn't really seem necessary. There are surely enough people out there who'd be excited about a new JT record as it is.

As for Timbo's involvement, unless he's been holding back his primo shit for this project - and with a new Missy album on the way, I seriously doubt he has - then I'm not trying to hear anything new from him. I'd much rather hear JT on a Mike Will beat these days, and if the kid has any sense he'll have done just that at least once.

Interesting. They miss complementing each other's styles by a few degrees imo. Not that JT is the ultimate in grown and sexy, but I think CC's sound and vibe is a little too young and fumbling in the heating up panties department. Scruffy Vans to polished Mezlans, you know?

Sounds like a Robin Thicke/Pharrell demo.

yeah i see you.. i would think CC has some things that could compliment JT, maybe we just haven't heard them yet. im not a huge CC fan, but i just think he could be that more modern spin that JT needs to progress. MWMI isnt complicated enough, if that makes sense?

...but maybe i do want a MWMI/JT/future song? paging noz!

I can't hear into the future to know what it is CC has in him that we haven't heard yet, so I can only go on what I've heard so far.
I am a big CC fan but do not see him as more modern than JT or producing more complex beats than Mike Will (who I am also a big fan of).

Anyhow - only way to know is to hear it in action.

    THIS.

Timbaland's lasting unfortunate mark on the publishing industry.

    First there was:

    Get your _____ on

    Then:

    ______ bringing _____ back.

My very own employer could not resist this hed yesterday, which to date is the one hit in a keyword search for "sexy" in 2013.

"Justin Timberlake brings sexy back with new song"

I enjoyed the song and, yes, would rather a sans-Jigga affair. My knowingly untrue commentary on Twitter: "Most bells since Bob James?"

I like Justin and am curious to hear the full album.

Dammit. I logged in just to say that this sounds like a Robin Thicke single.

  • I recall the strut's collective fawning over the first album.

people still listen to that one?

    sounded fake to me.

Yes. Heavy "Change Clothes" vibes, too.

I have the same problem with JT that I have with The-Dream: I do not find him convincing as a sexual dude. And considering his oeuvre, that's kind of a big deal. I'll check the new one just to see what the kids/aggressive populists are listening to, but I don't know.

I played the shit out of FutureSexLoveAngelMusicBaby for like a week and a half, then set the cd down somewhere and never thought of it again. The Jonathan Franzen of r&b.

And now we wait with bated breath* for a list of sexually convincing dudes.

*I used to think that was spelled "baited breath," which made me think that it was a description of a condition also knowed as "mud minnow mouth."

It's Fauntleroy, apparently. Wheels within wheels.

Although I bumped the shit out of them when they came out and for a while afterwards, I haven't listened to either of JT's albums for a minute now. I might use this thread as an excuse to dig them out.

    The intro is genuinely erotic.

Oh, I don't know...I don't listen to a lot of the young youths, but off the top (delicious!), like, Miguel, Jai Paul, um, that Inc. record had a convincing (if awkward) sex vibe. Frank Ocean didn't do it for me, Jeremih's good I guess but sounds a little young for me to take real serious. Dream's really talented, but he macks like a cd changer with a wallet. JT seems to operate from the skin outward, without a lot of depth or carnality. Like MJ, he always sounds like he'd rather be somewhere dancing fast.

I think I used to think it was "baited," too. See also: "jive with," "pour over," and "peaked my interest."

There is very much a deficit of sexually convincing guys. Jeremih's record brought both the heat and the wet, but he himself comes off as sexy as the plush toy Dalmatian at the firehouse.
I made the mistake of looking him up - cue wah wah waaaaaah anticlimactic sound effect

James' list is a good one - these guys are making sexy music, but they themselves are on some serious over-thinking it, too deliberate freshman vibes.
Where the fuck are the adult men? (who don't pee on people)

This is far better than the stuff I heard on the pop/chart channels that some of the lads at work sometimes put on, I hope JT has got some better new material than this but this one is ok to my ears.

I will ride for Cry Me A River till the day I die and I think the strut fawning peaked when My Love was leaked but I'll happily hold my hands up and admit I haven't revisited either in five years. To be fair it's not really a genre that in general encourages revisiting years later.

The fake point and James questioning of JT's carnal vibes are both interesting points. I guess that I never really treated him as a serious artist in that manner - more a frontman for some really great, for want of a better word, crossover, pop music. Sort of like a male Madonna.
