About

Stunts, Blunts and Hip Hop is the debut album from hip hop producer-emcee Diamond D, released in 1992. The album features some of the earliest appearances from Diamond's later D.I.T.C. partners Big L and Fat Joe, as well as his crew the Psychotic Neurotics. Although Diamond D handles the majority of the album's production, other popular beat makers such as Large Professor, Q-Tip, Jazzy Jay, Showbiz, and DJ Mark the 45 King co-produce on several tracks. The album features the singles "Best-Kept Secret" and "Sally Got a One-Track Mind." The album was not released on vinyl, however, there were promotional copies pressed up with full artwork which were very highly sought-after. The vinyl edition was eventually made available as a reissue years later. The original promo has a sticker on it; the reissue had this sticker scanned into the artwork.

In 1998, the album was selected as one of The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums.[3]

This is the album where I first started to hear Derek X leave his contemporaries behind.

This album blew my mind. Always a go to... I've always thought simple beats and lyrics could go a long way and this is a fine example of that.

"I kept my cool because I'm only one deep
One against 10--that's a hellafied beef"

This album is a production masterpiece--so many styles flipped. I have the promo vinyl in a beat-to-shit cover, and I can't see myself ever giving it up.

One of those LP's that will never sound old to my ears. If it wasn't for "Confused" it would be perfect IMO.

    It was amazing.
I played it to death but haven't felt tempted to play it in years, maybe because I just got some dodgy boot.
Will get the OG one day.

One of the best rap albums ever made - in my top 5 for sure. Only three hundred og's pressed I believe. My physical brother owns one, the sticker on the cover sonnnn. Real holy grail.

amazing lp, but the skits suck. bought the OG promo at the first heat rocks. used to see it on ebay in the early days go for virtually no money at all. i didn't really know about it then (as a promo-only thing), but it seemed to suddenly rocket in price when people realised how good and rare it is. how many copies do people think were pressed - 1500?

Maybe true on the rarity of the promo realization, but thanks in part to its videos on Rap City, there was no delay in people praising the album.

There was a copy at my college radio station upon initial release. I wonder who wound up stealing it.

Ya mama so bald when you play Monopoly, she need the hat.

It's easy to have only 300 pressed when your label sucked as bad as Chemistry.

  • I think the 300 copy thing is a tall tale. From a random sampling of people, I know too many who own the OG (myself included) to believe that there are only 300, also in my experience, no label (even one as shitty as Chemistry) would bother to press up 300 copies of an album on vinyl, they would have likely either forsworn it completely or pressed up at least a thousand. Regardless, this is one of the most perfect albums I have ever heard. This, "Breaking Atoms", and "The Low End Theory" form some kind of holy trinity of rap in the private mind garden of my youth.

  • Hypnotic sample and rolling bassline had me gripped. That gem and "Went For Mine".

  • gripped and flipped.

    Great album though, no doubt.

  • Love this record.

Back around 1999 or so, I saw some interview with Alyssa Milano and she had a top 10 things she's listening to or soenthing and she had UNKLE and Stunts, Blunts, and Hip Hop. I always got a kick out of that. I'm pretty sure it was her. I couldn't find it on zee google.

  • yeah, probably my favorite hiphop album...at least up there with a couple others.
one of my oldest friends longtime girlfriend surprised the hell out of me at a barbecue a couple years back. the album was playing and she rhymed along to the whole damn thing. we had a good time with that.

the only shit id drop from it is "yo pass that shit" or whatever it is where Fat Joe says he is living hard like a penis. absolute terrible verses on that one.

but man....the rest is perfection. im surprised its this low on the list!!

I'd drop "Confused" way before "Pass That Shit" but cosign on the Fat Joe hot garbage on that track. "Get so much sex I belong in porn!" Pffft.

  • I think this album also featured the young and unheard of Big Muthafuckin L as well on one of the skits. When I heard that voice I had to know who the Hell he was! But when I did hear him... instant scorcher...R.I.P. to Big L....

I thought Big L came out on Yes U May after Children of The Corn mix tapes.

Did he have a spoken skit on Diamonds album?

as weak Confused sounds amonst the other tracks i think that for an R&B joint he did a better job than shit like the R&Bish; attempts like the one offa Brand Nubians album.

Red Light Green Light 123 into I Went For Mine is one of my favorite song to song transitions.

There's a potentially divisive thread, "Confused" vs "Try To Do Me". Friendships would be tested.

Speaking of which, if I'm remembering right, Stunts was released the exact same day as Showbiz and AG's Runaway Slave.

They aren't making Tuesdays like that anymore.

one of my favorite rap albums and I don't usually bother too much with lists.
I gladly paid 200 bucks for this even though now you can get it for half that. fuck it..
I always wondered about the exact amount of promo copies pressed too.
I'd say 1000 at least, no way it was only 300. would love to get some insight on that..
