do you feel that poverty is not a real and growing problem in the States?

    no

can you explain a little more why you feel that the standard of living is acceptable (or improving?) for those who have to live cheque to cheque, amass debt to buy simple, everyday things and live in a multi-generational cycle of poverty and why you feel that the growing the gap between the rich and poor is not problematic.

While you're so concerned about Aaron Brown "planting a seed," you might want to check out the tree that the WSJ has shoved up your ass.

its so much easier to just talk trash then actually have to present an argument, don't you think?

    no.

it's much harder to come up with funny one-liners.

because taking down you Bill Kristol ass munchers is like shooting fish in barell.

when you come up with one let me know.

Lets not ignore the fact that Managemnet knows how much these "benefits" cost and use it as a negotiating tactic to OFFER YOU LESS MONEY... Homie if you are anywhere from 21-35 with a failry clean medical record, fuck the benefits and take the cash. I have family members and they said medical insurance for healthy young people is pretty mucha scam because you pay into it but never use it.

That OP ed page is a joke and whoever said they were gaining because of the benefits is insane. How about they try paying the poor decent liveable wage AND health benefits? That is a solution, not eliminating one portion of what you should be paid so you can get something else that should be a base standard for all peoples.

I would agree with some of that, but medical insurance is not a scam. Just say you fall down some steps or you expedit falls on you and you break some bones. You may have been a healthy person, but that shit is still going to cost you a shit load of money if you dont have insurance. While the insurance industry is pretty shitty it doesnt make their product any less important.

You can actually get emergency coverage that would cover most of that, and its about half the cost of full health insurance.

Anyway if you do the math it doesn't work out. If you are a healthy 21-35 year old, health insurance runs about $150 to $200 a month if you pay for it on your own. This equals out to about $2400 per year for your health insurance. Most companies value this at around $5000 -$10,000 in terms of your salary. SO they will say yeh we are offering you $35,000 PLUS BENEFITS, which works out to you know: $45,000 per year. And lets not get into the fact that alot of companies these days are not even offering full coverage or they are having employees pay for part of their health insurance. And also be careful about some of those "accidents" too. Health insurance comapnies are notorious for being extremely picky about what you can and can't cover.

It doesn't add up. And yeh it is a scam for most healthy people. You are afraid something bad might happen.

Use your imagination. Why would a 40 year old be going to law school? Hmmmmm. Could he already be working in a law firm? Could that law firm have a job for him when he gets out? Could that law firm be one of the top firms in the country? Could the salary be about 2 1/4 after bonus?

    Could be.

Well I am not your typical healthy person, and my employer covers the full cost of my health care. My girlfriend however was without health care for some time and some very minor health issues became very expensive.

In general I find that this is exactly how things work. For instance, I'm currently a neuro-surgeon at a big hospital. Not only is the pay great, but the hospital is also helping me pay for my first 4 years of med-school.

  • article that does not take into account the rise in the value of benefits that workers take home.

can you elaborate? i take it you mean health/dental benefits? they may have risen in value, but if they can't be traded in for essentials such as food, shelter, clothing and school supplies - those benefits are of little help in day to day living.

There was an op-ed piece in the WSJ earlier this week.

You can trade the money you save on those benefits in for food, shelter, clothing, school supplies - - cigarettes and porn if you want to.

As far as Im conerned the only reason Im working is to keep my benefits.

What money is anyone saving? If most middle to low income people didnt get insurance through an employer they would not have insurance at all, and if they did have a medical emergency they would probably have to file for bankruptcy due to the high bills. "54.5 percent of all bankruptcies"* are due to medical bills. This argument is ridiculous as is the WSJ op ed page.

    *Harvard Review

Not to mention that the "Value" of these benefits is being outpaced by their cost. I've been working for a Fortune 500 company for 20 years, and I've seen our medical/dental benefits increase in cost and decrease in value over the years. Moreso since I got married and had a child. The increases I get don't cover the money I have to put out for the benefits (by far). This in addition to the fact that the actual "benefits" are getting less and less. Prescription co-pays have quadrupled in the last few years as have office and ER copays. "Regular" health insurance is closing in on "emergency/catastrophic" insurance rather quickly.

medical malpractice and the cost of drugs; you have to sell a lot of asprin to pay off a 250 million dollar judgment.

maybe the trial lawyers will bankrupt this industry too. Then the only drugs you'll be able to get in this country 'll be Heroine and Meth.

Oh, I see. I thought that equation had been disproved long ago. But I guess we need "tort reform" so that big bad malpractice victims will stop picking on the iddy widdy HMOs, drug companies and reckless doctors? The horror...
