BTW I now think that there are at least two artists who've been recorded on both labels
i hadn't thought of Tolliver, well done. That's 2 out of 3 then There's a least one more, probably the hardest to find.
Edit: I was thinking of his LP on Tribe, duh... don't think he ever did anything on Strata-east
yep you got it, and on at least three strata east joints.
Funny that there was so little cross pollination, wonder if it was a regional thing.
You win the honour to set the next vinyl geek question on this thread (which hasn't exactly set the board alight lets face it , but where there's hope.....)
I too am surprised at the lack of cross pollination.
Who was the only musician to play with both Barbra Streisand and Funkadelic? NO GOOGLING.
Oh shit, that's not even who I was thinking of. I guess there is more than one.
NEVERMIND.
EDIT: You sure he played with Babs? Can't find a mention of it.
trying to think up a good one. throw anther one out there in the meantime pls..
After some 'research' I'm pretty sure Dennis Chambers never played with Babs, so the last one is still open.
Whose the odd one out? : Gary Mcfarland, King Curtis, Donny Hathaway, Lee Morgan
What have James Brown, Bobby Womack and David Axelrod all got in common?
Donny Hathaway. He committed suicide and the others were murdered.
yep. too easy I guess. Hint - the other one is equally morbid
yep, well done, their sons to be exact
Name four artists who have recorded for both Stax and Motown.
(Session musicians, group members and songwriters don't count - all solo acts.)
It's a little unfair as he wasn't a full member of P-Funk.
It was this dude:
Nigerian percussionist Gaspar Lawal, probably best known for his tune Kita Kita, which was comped on Nigeria 70.
"b. 23 September 1948, Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria. A percussionist and band leader, Lawal left Nigeria to settle in the UK in the mid-60s. Basing himself in London, he became rapidly established in the session scene, and over the next 10 years recorded with a large number of local and visiting musicians, covering a wide variety of styles, including Ginger Baker???s Airforce, Stephen Stills, the Rolling Stones, George Clinton???s Funkadelic and Barbra Streisand."

I keep coming back to Banks and Barnes, both of whom recorded for Detroit labels and Stax/Volt. But they did not record for Motown (that I know of).
