Last night at the bar, someone asked me to name my all-time favorite tv show and movie. Without any hesitation whatsoever I said:

Soprano's & Goodfellas.

What are yours?

Movie is impossible, as in favourite record impossible...though in this moment, on this day, Sexy Beast and Funny Games (1997) come to mind.

Show is a tie between Good Times and The Wire.

    Soprano's ?

wow timely post. I was just having this discussion with my girl last night. Soprano's is GOAT. Much as I love the Wire, the Soprano's is it. Way more complex, nuanced IMO. The more I think about it, the less of a contest there is actually btwn Sopranos and Wire; I think hindsight plays a big part in my assessment because I remember thinking Wire was the better show when it was on.

Movie is way tougher....like impossible. It may well be Blues Brothers.

Paging Batmon to hatt on both Soprano's and Gfellas.

  • personally, i feel Casino > Goodfellas. but i don't condemn harv for thinking contrary. both are phenomenal while catering to different tastes.

  • also in the running;

    every baseball movie ever made.

Casino is great but I prefer the OG.

Long Gone may be my favorite baseball movie of all time (although I haven't seen it since high school).

Good pick on Band of Brothers. I like The Pacific as well.

Still haven't ever been able to get into The Wire.

My alternate answer might be: The White Shadow & Over the Edge.

  • while i love it, the wire is like twitter.

everyone talks about how important it is, there's 140 characters and there's long stretches where nothing interesting happens.

    Omar is still GOAT antihero

  • Show is MR. SHOW (C'mon people!?!?!)

Movie is tough... gotta think on that one

The Simpsons (which, as far as I'm concerned, went off the air years ago) and 2001

    Impossibe, but today....

Batman the 60's series in top 3 all time for me w/ TV shows.

And in keeping w/ the tired and re-warmed over Gangster theme....Ill go w/ Michael Mann's Thief in that 'genre'.

U.S. probably "Hill Street Blues" and UK, "Blake's 7".

Films, so many, "Diva" or "Meet Joe Black" tonight - Anthony Hopkins really sells man-who-knows-this-is-his-last-night-on-Earth, for me. Almost tears.

    Almost.

  • Generaion Kill / Full Metal Jacket......I think, and no I don't have a war fixation...I don't think.

    Seinfeld for TV shows

    Pulp Fiction for movies

  • The Wire for TV with Soprano's second.

Film is tougher, arguably Goodfellas. Taxi Driver and Taking of Pelham 123 are also up there.

for TV show I could say Twin Peaks but I'd be lying because I could watch The Simpsons for days on end.

same for movie, there's a long list with films like Vertigo, The Conversation, Ran, Terra em Transe, Man Is Not a Bird, Vernon Florida, Stroszek, etc and so on, but the movie I've watched the most times is The Big Lebowski, followed by The Three Amigos!

  • without thinking too hard about it, off the top of my head

    TV: Party Down

    Film: Buffalo 66

I'll go with favorite tv show and movie for $400, Alec.

Curb your Enthusiasm and Menace To Society.

Correct and that leads us into final Jeopardy.

    hahahahahaha.

Sopranos for TV show, definitely. In comedy, I'd have to say Louie.

Movies is too hard. For me, it would probably be Taxi Driver.

  • The Simpsons for TV, and it isn't close. Frankly, the cultural education I got from the Simpsons and rap music growing up in Ohio far outweighed my high school education.

One movie seems dumb, but I'll say Lebowski.
