are some of the 80's releases suggested actually attempts to get down or were they just a function of producers exploring new technology (ie drum machines and samplers etc) though?

It's a great point. Plenty of musicians had the "rap is crap" attitude, but still wanted a banging drum beat. Seeing how Bam credits Kraftwerk the technology is separate from what influences you, why you do it, if your just riding a trend etc. Only an interview with the artist stating his feelings will let us know.
