I won't even start with this.

How about doing a little homework. This is a keylabel in black music history, most of the stuff isn't expensive and you'll find it everywhere. Check the label on discogs, listen to youtube-clips, go to your local record store and listen through the Philly Int. bin. I'm never the first with little dude bashing but dude...find out yourself.

    BTW, anything good on CTI?

This is like asking, "Hey, I hear good things about this stuff called food - what should I check out?"

Try this. Should be an easy pull.

    LOL dudes,
i was just asking for your hard filed PI records, the ones you think are great.
    As in specfic examples.

YES I REALIZE THIS LABEL IS AMAZING AND VAST AND HOMEWORK IS NECESSARY.
But a thread is easier, and provides a chance for some palaver.

    Comparing PI to food? Really?

It looks like PI is about 45s.
    Or a nice comp.

    Thanks.

No you're totally wrong. It is all about the albums & 12"s.

For example this is a beautiful cohesive album:

Sorry, I had a feeling that would come off sounding snotty. But in my defence, you did phrase the question kind of badly. I meant it in the sense that, if you're into black music, that shit is amongst the fundamentals. You can get it for cheap, most of it's really good and, at its best, it's some high-water mark type shit. Put simply, I judge people who can tell you all about obscure moder one-trackers from fly-by-night indies in Fresno or Decatur, yet don't own War Of The Gods.

Like most r&b labels back then, PIR was largely singles-driven. But Gamble & Huff had been around for a while and were always quick to plug into the trends of the day. So you could grab an album by The O'Jays or Billy Paul or Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and, in between the big hits everyone knows, there'd be these long Whitfield-esque workouts with lyrics covering social issues or black consciousness and self-determination. There was a lot of quite subversive Garveyite shit on their productions that you weren't really hearing all that much in mainstream black music - certainly not from acts that were regularly getting hit records - until Marley broke through, and by that time PIR had arguably already peaked.

There are some pretty thorough compilations out there, of course. But just about all the key PIR acts had solid albums that are worth copping. Don't sleep on the 80s stuff either.

A better analogy might be "air". If you're talking about the sound of black music in the mid-late 70s, it's basically what it is.

another classique, on teh ballad tip

I highly recommend Post-Motown Jackson under Gamble and Huff. Recording in Philly and incorporating alot of their Muslim messages.

Released in 1976 for Epic Records and Philadelphia International Records as a joint venture. The album was the band's first for CBS, following their seven-year tenure on Motown as "The Jackson 5". Jackson 5 member Jermaine Jackson stayed with Motown when his brothers broke their contracts and defected to CBS; he was replaced by youngest Jackson brother Randy.
Philadelphia International heads Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff produced and executive produced the album, including their first top ten hit in two years "Enjoy Yourself", but had a difficult time focusing on a sound for the now-grown-up boy band. However, the group was able for the first time to write their own material, something that had been denied to them at Motown. The Jacksons composed "Style of Life" and "Blues Away" on their own. "Blues Away" was the first published song written by lead singer Michael Jackson, who began to take a more percussive vocal approach beginning with this album. This album also spawned the second R&B single "Show You the Way to Go". The album itself placed #36 and #6 on the pop and R&B album charts respectively.

Isnt there an interview on NPR with Gamble and Huff that came out when they dropped the comp?

Major I put the Good Times track on a cd for a couple of my regulars and they didn't catch on until 3 or 4 days later that it was the jacksons, a criminally slept on record in my opinion.
