Speak on 'em.

For me, it's gotta be Ludacris and Twista. Those dudes certainly can rap, but I haven't heard anything by either in years that I wanted to hear a second time.

Side bet: How long before someone catches feelings in this thread?

Soon as you said Twista. I'm not your friend anymore.

Too $hort has never been considered a "great rapper," has he? I love him, but his flow is not what I'd call super technical.

And yeah, Eminem is pretty much the king of this category.

Eminem was the first to come to mind. Cannot stand his emo rapps about his dysfunctional family life and beefs with Mariah. 10-15 years later and he's still rapping about the same crap, with the same juvenile writing style.

    Nelly.
    Common.
    Master P.

I know this dude has plenty more "Don't Touch Me"-level cuts in him. I just know it. But he gets lazy and unfocused. Still, when he's on it, he's fantastic.

For me, it's probably Wayne. I'm in the "Juvenile >> Wayne" contingent for sure.

That's not a contingent. That's just reality, always has been.

Akways wanted to like him, but Banner pretty much sucks to me.

And of course Jay-Z and Eminem go without saying.

    Jay-Z (mid-to-late-period)
    Common (LWFC is fine)
Beastie Boys (Licensed To Ill is fine)
    Aesop Rock
    Talib Kweli
    Kanye West

I can't totally dislike Lil Wayne and Eminem - I've always been a sporadic fan.

"Too $hort has never been considered a "great rapper," has he? I love him, but his flow is not what I'd call super technical."

I'm not disagreeing with you about $hort Dog not being a very technical rapper, but it begs us to descend into an unwinnable argument about what a "great rapper" is.

Not to mention, if it's a rapper you don't like, chances are they aren't making your list of "Best Rappers" either

What I've seen is that Twista has indeed within the past 10 years worked his way into that conversation.

^ So what's the list of rappers considered to be top 25?

I think all of those that you mention are known for their skills, rather than as "flash-in-the-pan ass rappers". That's good enough for me...some people think they are genuinely GOOD rappers, but I can't hang...

I think Twista is up there.

  • if we're starting with "greatest rappers" and going backwards from there.....

...... i've always been on the fence with sadat x. love/hate kinda thing.

  • Tupac, obviously.

I can appreciate and hate at the same time. File under Tupac and Em. I can see why people rate them high, but I think they are unbearable.

I'm disconnected - is the general hip hop consensus that Kanye is a great rapper?
