Goodfellas

There's a terrific piece about the making of Goodfellas on GQ.com that's loaded with fascinating trivia, most of which I certainly didn't know - things like how Tom Cruise and Madonna were briefly under consideration for the roles of Henry & Karen Hill, and how John Malkovich nearly played Jimmy The Gent. Good to read the stories of some of the crew and peripheral cast members, too.

There's been a few of these pieces recently, what with it being 20 years since the movie came out, but this is one of the more readable examples. Definitely worth a few minutes of your time.

Every time Goodfellas is on I can't resist watching at least a few minutes of it.

I wouldn't miss Casino if I never saw it again.

Heh. There's a kind of timelessness in a well-told mob drama that's true of all manner of great stories going back to the time of the ancient Greeks - hubris, tragic heroes, that kind of shit. I dunno that there's anything idiomatically Caucasoid about those things. Also, as far as that article is concerned, it feeds into my fascination with the scores of little details and micro-stories that go into making up the bigger picture. I've seen Goodfellas dozens of times now, to that profoundly irritating point where I can recite huge passages of dialogue from it, so anything which enriches that experience - such as why Scorsese chose a song by uber-hippy Donovan to soundtrack the scene where Billy Batts gets seven shades of shite kicked out of him - is all good as far as I'm concerned.

Don't get me wrong, I recognise that it's been done and done and done. But for all of that, the story of the mob is one of the stories of America. And, for better or worse, America's fascination with itself and its comparatively brief history has traditionally been played out on screen, big and small. I don't see any possibility of that changing any time soon, at least not until audiences get bored with the self-mythologising aspect of it.

  • moving past the tangential rhetoric, it was a highly enjoyable article to read and one of the better submissions to a GQ camp that lost it's touch years ago.
