Seeking advice for a friend here...
Ok, I am not gonna try and put anybody on blast here, but a fairly well known 'golden era' rapper was given a decent sum of money via western union about 5 months ago to record a couple of verses for a track.
Raps have not been recorded and no contact.
Dude has emailed said rapper several times over the last 4 months with no reply, no reply on myspace, and no reply on facebook.
Although i would never pay someone in full upfront, this still makes me sick.
To make it even harder it's an international conundrum.
How would you guys handle this?

Take the loss and learn from your mistakes. You never pay anyone, the full amount, with no paper work. Just because they're "famous" doesn't mean they aren't shady. I've personally seen some f**ked up, shady shit go down with rappers over the years and it's just a reminder that they are no different from you or me. The only thing is that they think they can get away with a lot more than us, AND THEY USUALLY DO!

Any guesses who this is? I bet it's Chino XL. "Golden era," though? Hmm.

Who the hell would pay Chino XL to rap let alone want him on their tracks?

Well apparently some Australian rapper paid him for a feature, and Chino proceeded to diss him (subliminally) on the track he was featured on. This then spawned some talk about Chino's devious ways.

Why is this dude Chino still rapping? He had one song "Creep" that was sort of a hit in 1996. I haven't heard anything else from the guy.

I can't front-- I liked his first album, and that joint he did with Saafir was good. No idea what's been going on in the ten years since, though.

I don't listen to him but i saw him on some soft core porn show on cinemax called the zane chronicles or something like that. So i'm not sure how his career is going.

i had a friend doing some ghostwriting for him -- so maybe not too good?

    percee p

Last I heard he was on a track which someone I know did the beat for.

    Good luck tho.

Lesson, never pay upfront without a contact.

Why not get someone off the street to do the verse and just put percee's name on the cover. And then mail a copy of the album to him with a condom in it...

I read once that's the way soulstrut handles it's biz

take it back to the 'golden era' and:
    shoot up his crib
put a broomstick up his ass
    tie up relatives
flaming bag of dog doo on the porch

As far as golden era celeb status he makes Chino XL look like Run DMC.

You probably just subsidized that guy's income for a year. Maybe two.

And if you knew your Judge Judy you'd know you're shit outta luck with no contract buddy.

Just because it was never reduced to writing, doesn't mean you don't have a valid contract. I'd sue his ass in a local court, get a default judgment if he doesn't show up, find his bank and freeze his assets or get a lien on some property.

A service contract doesn't fall under the statute of frauds requirement of the UCC and does not have to be in writing. Only sales for goods over a certain amount or employment contracts lasting more than a year.
