Beg to differ that Dead Man was the first acid western. That title belongs to Alejandro Jodorowski's El Topo, which is a psychedelic acid trip /mystical nonsense/kung-fu film structured masterpiece.
Psychedelic western is cool, but there is also existential western. "Ride in the Whirlwind" and "The Shooting" both directed by Monte Hellman (Two Lane Blacktop) are worth checking out. Both featuring the writing and acting talents of a young Jack Nicholson and "Ride the Whirlwind" also has Harry Dean Stanton.
