I've never been as crazy deep with records as alot of the OG dudes on here but I paid some dues and learned some things along the way. I don't contribute a whole lot of usefull music posts these days but I'm still addicted just like the rest of you.
I've met some great people on here, made 2 records (with more on the way), had some good trades and learned more than I ever would have on my own.

I'm Big Stacks from Kakalak. I'm 35 years old, a Ph.D. graduate, and a college professor by day. I've been collecting seriously for about 20 years, though I was buying records since the mid-70's. I'm known on the 'Strut for my (1) patented post-ending steelo (see below), (2) wacky stories from my single life (It was wild!!!), (3) straight-up honesty on racial issues and such (and in general), (4) on-point relationship advice, (5) level-headed, well-thought out posts/responses ("It's the Libra in me, accompanied by the cognac"), (6) proppin' "common classic" LPs (You didn't know? Anyways, I've met and befriended a lot of very good folks from here. Funny how the newer cats would (& still do) get all "starry-eyed" over meeting a real OG. Haha!! Later on at Aron's empty parking lot, we ran into an all singing, all dancing crackhead who offered us blowjobs. When we politley declined, he began to serenade us with an unforgettable rendition of "It's so Hard to say goodbye". Which was then followed up by an original(?) jawn titled "Slow the Party down, Mister DJ". Guzzo filmed it, but with no sound!!!!! DAMN!! Still though, after that, we were pals and I've been trying to get him to leave that Modern Soul alone but he jusss won't listen.
My trajectory on SoulStrut is very long and complex so I won't bore you with all that. I still check the site every day and post from time to time, My fascination with records still remains but my passion for digging has taken a back seat to getting other aspects of my life in check. Right now, conceptualizing a full length rackord of sound collage and improv blowouts from my former prog drummer existence. Hope to be done with that within a year, maybe less.
I still track down certain thangs on the Bay but not like I used to roll. Trips to ChiTown, braving the sinister winter to learn the elusive arts of diggin and pick up some raer from Dante. Philly digs with Raj & Otis. Detroit digs at Bob Mays and secret squirrel hideaways. Yes, it's been a while but I'll be back. In the meantime, see if y'all can catch up. You lil bitches....

Allow me a second to give some of you guys props for dropping knowledge, insights and reccomendations in my short time here. This site gets a rep for nerdy comic book store guy types and snobs in general and while that's true for some peeps, a lot of you have definitely kicked knowledge even when I ask some ignant questions. As a fan of music fan period, the knowledge on this forum is priceless for myself and I try to learn everyday. I know it can be annoying when you put years into music and then people like me read a 5 minute post of yours and all of a sudden have aquired knowledge that may have taken u a decade or more to compile...oh and im from the stonesthrow message board, so hate me now (nah, I got a lot of great insights from there aswell and i think some of u have posted there too, which is how i found out about this site). but please realize that knowledge u share opens worlds/minds/musical landscapes for real. like the info y'all kicked for me in the funkadelic thread, i can't find writeups on sheit like that in libraries, and the knowledge shared was supoib. For myself it's a trip to sometimes just lurk posts of groups/acts I've never phucking heard of and probably wouldnt anywhere else discussed in such detail. Its like an encyclopedia with swear words, a great thing. I've been checking the strut for about 4 years now, was one of the first antipodean posters .. was a bit wet behind the ears in the early days but things have since come along quite nicely on the collection front ... I'm not at all obsessed with collecting OG's of the heavy bits - Australia was white bread central back in the day (and in many ways it still is) - appreciate quality music so re-ish's of damn sam, marc moulin, sly johnson etc are fine with me, that said, I'm holding down a rather healthy collection of australian and new zealand pieces ..

You can see how long I've been a member by the slot on the left. A friend of mine, Luck, posts under that very name and recommended the site to me. I wasn't too impressed at first - the day I checked it out for the first time, the posts were heavy on hip-hop and breakbeats. I never got it with rap, and I'll obsess over a label design quicker than an open drum break, so I didn't see much going on at first. But, Motown's record reviews kept bringing me back, as did the posts on older soul and funk. I'm amazed at the occasional posts on psych, country, and any other music that doesn't fit the soul/jazz continuum. And I'm startled at the number of Chicago Soulstrutters whom I already knew before I got here. Even though the in-jokes get WAY too plentiful sometimes, I still like checking up on this site every day, gleaming knowledge.
My story? Lifelong resident of Chicago, playing harmonica and singing in a garage-a-billy band called the Dealbreakers (currently recording an album), been accumulating records for 20-some years (although I had vinyl as a kid, before then). My day gig is as a music writer (NOT "critic," thanks!) for a local entertainment magazine, and I've also freelanced for different publications including No Depression, Roctober, Living Blues, Blender, the Chicago Reader, New City and several others.
A month ago, me and my friend John Ciba DJed a soul night at a local rock club called the Hideout. Had a huge turnout - huge FEMALE attendance, it wasn't just male record collectors! It was inspiring to see relatively young folks getting sweaty to 60's and 70's soul and funk. We did so well at the cash register that starting in September, it will be a monthly gig. (Sept. 10 - my band is playing earlier that same night at the same spot, opening for an alt-country act.)
In a couple of days I'll be visiting England, so I guess I'd better scroll up that thread on Great Britain digging spots...

Yeah I was kinda worried about starting this thread because I figured it would repeat-steez.
I don't have the deep crate knowledge that a lot of posters do, but I'm the type of person that couldn't exist without music. I'm assuming a lot of you are the same. I produce hip hop and (blazing?) downtempo stuff. I posted about myself in the Introductions thread, so I don't want to type it all out again here. But I'm really liking the community vibe around here, and looking forward to hopefully becoming a little part of it.
Also, this place makes me want to step up my 'real world moves'... because a lot of you are doing your thing, and that's inspiring.

Motown brought me into this mess a few years back and I was like a regular junkie with it until this happened and since then, I've really been absent from the site because I have so little extra time these days.
Besides my record habits (which haven't slowed as much as I would have thought despite fatherhood), I write on music for a bunch of places that I'm proud of (Wax Poetics, NPR, Village Voice, etc.) and many places I'm not (they shall go nameless but take your pick). I blog way more than I should though these days, I'm getting paid to blog and much to my surprise, it's fast becoming my main source of stable income. It's not what I dreamed of but for a stop-gap job, I'm really not complaining too loudly. I did just finish my PhD though and would like to get a job in academia so I can justify the 8.5 years I spent in grad school and make undergrads call me "Professor 'Dub."
Musically, my tastes are ever shifting. I had this rant a few weeks back about how I've tried to dump all my jazz fusion albums once I realized how wack most of them were. Now I'm starting to get more into sweet soul and psych rock while my once fervent boogaloo interest is starting to wane a bit (I think a lot of that has to do with not DJing as much these days).
Mostly, I appreciate the collection of personalities here at SS. there are more different kinds of smart people who are insanely knowledgable about vastly different things (not all RR), it never fails to blow my mind. I bet we could put together everything from a Soulstrut Recipe Guide to Soulstrut's Consumer Handgun Report and it'd all be mad thorough.

I'm from Southern Germany (Stuttgart). I think that I was the first German to post on Soulstrut. I've been here when "le toupt" created "raer", "The Crates" created "shitbird" and "Never that, son!" and witnessed Soulstrut getting PAPPED. I've told many people about Soulstrut (e.g. Krautbreaks a.k.a. "Mr. Sucker").
My life was kinda messed up when I was still living in Stuttgart. But at last, my life went back to normal and I'm happy studying Biology in a small town near Frankfurt (Marburg). Let me know if you are going to Stuttgart or Frankfurt!!! I know the raer!
My parents listened to Isaac Hayes (Shaft OST), Aretha Franklin, Ramsey Lewis and other Soul and Jazz musicians in the 70s and 80s. I was in kindergarten back then. I still know what kind of record player we used to have (Thorens). I had my own records when I was a kid and was allowed to use our record player by myself!
I've first spent my allowance on records in 1994. I probably bought some hip hop.
A friend of mine introduced me to producing hip hop. I seriously started to look for samples in 1995 or 1996, but soon noticed that I was more interested in the old music itself. I didn't use my MPC2000 (which sucks!) in the last 3 years. I've spend a crazy amount of time listening to records at record stores. The store owners were patient with me. I don't own many records (2000-2500 alltogether), but I know many. I've been on digging trips to London, Paris, Strassbourg, Freiburg, Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg, Rome etc. I love libraries, Funk and Jazz. I'm currently trying to get into German oddities. I don't dig the "Moder Soul" fashion. I like the old school sound.
I recently managed to get some friends of mine into digging. FINALLY, I get to talk about records with "real life" friends. I met Dreskieboogie and Cosmophonic from the Soulstrut board. Dreski was arrested in Stuttgart and we didn't have much luck finding records but Cosmophonic seemed to be all happy in Giessen?!

The freaking LIZARD PEOPLE!!!!
Motown brought me into this mess a few years back and I was like a regular junkie with it until this happened and since then, I've really been absent from the site because I have so little extra time these days.
Besides my record habits (which haven't slowed as much as I would have thought despite fatherhood), I write on music for a bunch of places that I'm proud of (Wax Poetics, NPR, Village Voice, etc.) and many places I'm not (they shall go nameless but take your pick). I blog way more than I should though these days, I'm getting paid to blog and much to my surprise, it's fast becoming my main source of stable income. It's not what I dreamed of but for a stop-gap job, I'm really not complaining too loudly. I did just finish my PhD though and would like to get a job in academia so I can justify the 8.5 years I spent in grad school and make undergrads call me "Professor 'Dub."
Musically, my tastes are ever shifting. I had this rant a few weeks back about how I've tried to dump all my jazz fusion albums once I realized how wack most of them were. Now I'm starting to get more into sweet soul and psych rock while my once fervent boogaloo interest is starting to wane a bit (I think a lot of that has to do with not DJing as much these days).
Mostly, I appreciate the collection of personalities here at SS. there are more different kinds of smart people who are insanely knowledgable about vastly different things (not all RR), it never fails to blow my mind. I bet we could put together everything from a Soulstrut Recipe Guide to Soulstrut's Consumer Handgun Report and it'd all be mad thorough.
I'm Jonny Paycheck, also Plantain Chips, also Broccoli Bonzai, also Versace Broccoli, also SdotKlute. And some more. I've been on this site since late 2001. I came on through some soulman article that mentioned this board, and basically had fights with people and shamelessly promoted my record/group Soul Purpose. I can't even remember all the people I've gotten into it with and I could kind of care less. Anyways, I used to be known for beef. Now people are all like, "you've mellowed out". OK. I like good music especially sweet group soul and brazilian. OK.
I own Good Records NYC, a little shop in the East Village/Lower East Side. We try to keep things thorough. I have less time to post and more freedom. I used to work for a huge risk management firm and had more time to post and less freedom. I'm now eating a roll to soak up alcohol and then I'm going to sleep. Don't leave your chick around me. Cosmo, Simon, Zvi, and Justin is my motherfucking dudse on here. That is all.

i'm actually very calm and generous. but i have a crazy side and certain things set me off.
i like to dig for records just to talk to the poeple who are selling their records. i've been known to buy a record, clean it, file it and not see it again for years.
neville hipped me to soul strut. i've met countless strutters in real life who are all great. i love soul strut.
I'm from Southern Germany (Stuttgart). I think that I was the first German to post on Soulstrut. I've been here when "le toupt" created "raer", "The Crates" created "shitbird" and "Never that, son!" and witnessed Soulstrut getting PAPPED. I've told many people about Soulstrut (e.g. Krautbreaks a.k.a. "Mr. Sucker").
My life was kinda messed up when I was still living in Stuttgart. But at last, my life went back to normal and I'm happy studying Biology in a small town near Frankfurt (Marburg). Let me know if you are going to Stuttgart or Frankfurt!!! I know the raer!
My parents listened to Isaac Hayes (Shaft OST), Aretha Franklin, Ramsey Lewis and other Soul and Jazz musicians in the 70s and 80s. I was in kindergarten back then. I still know what kind of record player we used to have (Thorens). I had my own records when I was a kid and was allowed to use our record player by myself!
I've first spent my allowance on records in 1994. I probably bought some hip hop.
A friend of mine introduced me to producing hip hop. I seriously started to look for samples in 1995 or 1996, but soon noticed that I was more interested in the old music itself. I didn't use my MPC2000 (which sucks!) in the last 3 years. I've spend a crazy amount of time listening to records at record stores. The store owners were patient with me. I don't own many records (2000-2500 alltogether), but I know many. I've been on digging trips to London, Paris, Strassbourg, Freiburg, Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg, Rome etc. I love libraries, Funk and Jazz. I'm currently trying to get into German oddities. I don't dig the "Moder Soul" fashion. I like the old school sound.
I recently managed to get some friends of mine into digging. FINALLY, I get to talk about records with "real life" friends. I met Dreskieboogie and Cosmophonic from the Soulstrut board. Dreski was arrested in Stuttgart and we didn't have much luck finding records but Cosmophonic seemed to be all happy in Giessen?!
