Os Mutantes

I never paid them much attention, but now that I've listened to the first three LPs, I don't see what is so great about them. Other than a few songs, the LPs are pretty boring with dated psych elements like the sound of breaking glass and other soundscape type cheese. The stuff they do with Gilberto Gil is awesome, but this stuff is mediocre.b, 21b, 21Am I missing something?

    No disagreement here. I think some of their poppier songs are beautiful and great, but I can't sit down and listen to an album all the way through. The highs are HIGH, but the lows are dull...b, 21b, 21Give me their Best Of album, and I'm all set, thanks.b, 21b, 21I do not say the same for Gal Costa, btw...

I'm liking this, I think about half the songs on here are on the comp but there's some I haven't heard too. b, 21I love hearing the sounds these guys came up with, they must have spent alot of time in the studio. Reminds of psychedelic beatles stuff, like magical mystery tour. b, 21I kind of wish I knew some Portuguese so I could understand what they were saying. Although even if I did the lyrics probably wouldn't make much sense.

    I think the mistake some people tend to do when listen tob, 21Mutantes is listening to them as a rock/psych group,b, 21which they are not.b, 21Mustantes, at least on their 3 first records, were ab, 21Tropicalia band, mixing brazilian and foreignerb, 21rhythms, adding a bit of nonsense to the mix.b, 21As a rock band they are poor, but as a Tropicalist groupb, 21they're great.b, 21b, 21My 0,02.b, 21b, 21b, 21b, 21Peace

    font class="post"1b, 21b, 21"O Meu Refrigerador Nao Funciona" pretty much says it all.b, 21b, 21b, 21I love Os Mutantes for what they were doing in the political climate they were doing it in. The sound effects on their third LP can be a little grating, depending on how I'm approaching it at the time. Either way, there are some genuinely great songs among their 1st three LPs.b, 21b, 21And don't sleep on Rita Lee's 1st solo outing (Build Up). Some cringeworthy moments, including an awful cover of The Beatles' "And I Love Her." But some sweet spots as well.b, 21b, 21b, 21Saba - I'll gladly take those LPs off your hands.

    font class="post"1b, 21b, 21Check Technicolor - its an album where they redid a bunch of their early tracks w/English lyric translations... even though the versions are not nearly as good as the originals it is interesting to hear what they're saying. Some absurd dada/sci fi type shit mixed in w/the straight MPB.b, 21b, 21 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/1074.gif" alt="" 21b, 21b, 21I remember thinking the albums were a bit of a disappointment based on my expectations from the comp CD.

    side two of the 2nd LP is what I would play someone who wanted to hear what actual 60s psychedelic music is. That side of that LP is nearly flawless...every aspect of psych is represented during that 17 minutes. Amazing band. Not overrated, not over hyped at all IMO. The first 3 LPs are some stunning stuff...

    font class="post"1b, 21b, 21I can see dudes point...some dudes on here saying they cant listen to a whole LP, that they are "alright", that they are the equivilent of bad fashion is some too cool for school shit IMO. I want someone to name another band that did what they did WHEN they did it. The mixture of styles is phenomenal. The writing/hooks are as good as anything of the era, dude was a KILLER guitar player...they were a little more experimental and far out than the Gilberto, Gal and Caetano LPs of that era..which keep in mind were individual/solo artists using the same back up band...Mutantes were a group, which is a different dynamic than one individual with some session players. As a band they were unequaled in what they did, since hardly anyone was doing what they were doing.b, 21b, 21b, 21*cue some dude posting on here talking about some f*cking awful sandals and socks quasi psychedelic private pressed terd with 2 songs with fuzz on it and how it "sons" Mutantes*

    The Gilberto Gil S/T LP from 1968 is with them as the back-up band. And IMO thats a better tropicalia LP and a just plain better LP than any of the first three Mutantes LPs.
