b, 21Does this worry anyone? It seems like Obama should just keep his head down and campaign the battle-ground states to the finish.b, 21b, 21McCain is going to criticize Obama for spending money on a half-hour political ad. I'm wondering if the upside is there at all in giving a half-hour address.b,121b, 21I suppose the speech will have the potential to be great, but I'm not sure if the content will be "rah rah" or defensive or aggressive.b, 21b, 21Thoughts?

font class="post"1b,121b, 21Dude, unless Obama gets there and starts screaming: "I wanna kill all the crackers and steal their wives!" the "damage" this could do is pretty minimal. At worst, people will get bored and change the channel. But these days, McCain's complaining about Obama's media budget isn't exactly f*cking with "friendly with terrorists" on the level of trash talk.b,121b, 21As for the content, you already know what this will be: it will be Obama as the guy next door who is also an unflappable leader, i.e. "you can trust me even though I'm Black!"

font class="post"1b,121b, 21I'm worried about it, too. The only reason why I'm not more worried is that Obama's been so good with branding and timing so far.b, 21b, 21But if FOX pulls some "we aren't going to air the World Series so that Mr. Obama can have his commercial - heh heh heh" bullshit, then I could see this backfiring.

There's nothing better than a Democratic presidency for a right-leaning organization like Fox to rail against. Look at their ratings climb during the Clinton admin compared to the slump they've had under Bush. Believe me, behind closed doors, Fox execs WANT an Obama win.

The delay to the W.S. "mini game" is only 17 minutes I think? Not really that big of a deal. If anyone complains, I'm sure Jerome Bettis and Franco Harris can sort that out.b,121b,121img src="http://mespn.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/steelers-for-barack.jpg"1

I keep hearing people call this a speech. I haven't watched the trailer, but it is my impression this is a commercial, or as stated above an infomercial, or a mini-documentary. b,121b, 21I don't think he will speak live, not because he might screw up, but because somebody speaking into the camera is for 30 minutes is boring. b,121b, 21When I was a kid the 30 minute political ad was a tradition, and in my house greatly anticipated. b,121b, 21As to Obama's vast campaign riches. I find the money spent on campaigns appalling. Obama's choice to forgo public financing, and McCain's use of public finance loopholes, shine a bright light on the filthy influence buying that is American politics.b,121b, 21On the other hand, I said months ago that it would take huge quantities of money to combat McCain's attempts to define Obama. He has done very well (I hope) convincing a majority of voters that he is not who they say he is.

Word is, it'll be Obamaismyhomeboy at a table with 4 or 5 families talking with them about their needs and concerns, with Obamaismyhomeboy turning to the camera at times to address the American people directly.b,121b,121b,121b,121b,121b,121Obamaismyhomeboy.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I don't think it's all that horrible, in context. The context being that $150 million will be spent at the drop of a hat to make a total shit summer movie. So figure for the price of two crummy movies you're getting a presidential campaign instead. And a damn inspiring one at that. If he was getting all the money from corporate America then yeah, obviously, but it's my understanding it's mostly regular people giving the money.

font class="post"1b,121b,121"Failed promises, my friends!" Frankly, his characterization of this commercial as (paraphrased) "feel-good" is really missing the point. Did he really watch this? Some segments are downright somber.b,121b,121I'm still not sure how he's going to pay for half of these programs. The "no income tax for seniors making less than $50,000" pledge is a nice idea, but there's a reason why Illinois' Governor ended up screwing the CTA budget over the "free rides for seniors" bullshit that he wedged through, costing the city millions of dollars per year. Honorable ideas still cost real money to implement.

McCain is starting to use 'air quotes' almost as much as he says 'my friends.'
