There used to be this vinyl two-record set on Sire in the seventies called Roots Of British Rock, which answers all your questions about what UK kids did before the Beatles took off...it's more or less a summation of the British pop scene as it was in the fifties and early sixties...and when I say "pop," I do mean "pop"...for every one actual rock & roll song (like Mike Berry's awesome "Tribute To Buddy Holly"), there were about three pop/skiffle/trad-jazz-type acts, like the Caravelles or Mr. Acker Bilk. Out of print for decades, but still pops up every now and then cheap in used stores. Plus, the cover photo of the 13-year-old kid in his bedroom, playing a hollow-bodied electric guitar and sitting on top of one of those real little amps they used to make back in the fifties...total classic. (Not an actual '50s photo, the shot is obviously a 1970's simulation of the fifties, but STILL...)b,121b,121No blues, but for that you'd have to track down Sire's History Of British Blues.
