  • hahaha baptiste's fair to call my bluff.b,121b,121hell no, madlib is not the same of sun ra. but in the same way you can't have a flylo without a dill withers, you probably wouldn't have a shadows of tomorrow without a ra. He consciously emulates that production ethic doesn't he - churning it out, letting someone else sort it out and press it.b,121b,121Whilst I agree that there is probably more available than the a-z random rap collector would ever need to collect, i disagree that this has an impact on quality itself. I've found I come back to some of the less obvious joints in the madlib lexicon and rediscover them over time. The Declaime album is typical of this, it sounded pretty weird when it dropped, it now sounds like some of the best beat work he did. etc etc.

Haha just kidding, man. Of course I understand what you're trying to explain.b,121b,121Look, you can't have a Baptman without Warner Bros...b,121b,121;-)

font class="post"1b,121b,121I'm pretty sure the original comment was, "he's not redefining hip hop."b,121b,121I haven't heard the Declaime album in a long ass time, so I can't comment on how I feel about it now. And again, just to clarify, I'm not throwing hat on the dude, just saying that his music only has so much to offer me, and what it offers gets exhausted relatively quickly. I'm not gonna say I know what goes into his music making, but it seems like the output is an indication of the process. And, again, I'm not mad at it, it's just not my thing.

b,121P.S. Flying Lotus is on some other ish and is dope in his own right. But "redefining HIP-HOP" is a little too broad a statement for me. He took the Dilla road to a point and then paved his own way in another direction. But did'nt redefine the whole culture by a long shot.
Especially when he won't work with MC's[/b]...lol (I ain't bitter at all!!!) b,121b,121h,121

Only soulstrut can go 5 pages with like 2 people that have listened to the album in question.b,121b,121The Yoyo song is quality.b,121I really like the Kariem Riggins track.b,121Blow the Horns is cool.b,121All the rest of it was pretty alright.b,121b,121While some of yall are mad that crowds celebrate every turd he quietly shits on hip-hop, the truth is that it's not quiet at all. He has a large following and therefore manages to be one thing that many underdude kats never get: relevancy. There are teenagers that I work with that are always checking for his new material. Black teenagers. For many young heads he represents an alternative within the scene. No one is holding it down for them like Madlib. He's basically a subgenre unto himself. Whether [i]you/i1 actually like the music is another one.

  • hating on madlib is more played out than jocking him.b,121b,121being prolific isn't the end all be all, but i know plenty of talented dudes who could never keep up with his pace. sure, some of his sh!t isn't that amazing, but if beat making was baseball, his average would be hall of fame numbers. he has made a boat load of classic joints, which is a feat in this day and age.b,121b,121ease up. b,121b,121and i agree with thermos on most points.b,121b,121done.

font class="post"1b,121b,121You got it!b,121b,121Yes "Du Bon Son" will be released on vinyl, I promise, and it will be way better than it is (in my jukebox), now the track is 3 tracks in 1, the same melody arranged in 3 different ways... the end is "free"... a travel into SOUND... you'll see.b,121But for the moment I'm finishing a project called "Goodbye Planet Earth"... an EP... the idea is that it is the soundtrack of a (non-existing) movie, the story of a dude who leaves the planet (to find a better place to live).b,121b,121-b,121b,121But where the F*ck is Olski!!!??

Checked out Wigflip last night. Agree more or less with the consensus: Half-baked Quasimoto LP. A few nice beats, interesting samples, a handful of truly wack tracks, mostly forgettable. b,121b,121After that, checked out the Dil Cosby Suite... img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/fire.gif" alt="" 21

font class="post"1b,121b,121See this is the problem, if Madlib was a baseball player, he'd be hitting maybe .250. b,121b,121Every writer needs an editor. Madlib really needs an editor. That's the overall impression that I got from this album -- if someone went through and really polished it, it could be a really awesome EP or a pretty good album. It's not a turd -- it could be polished. b,121b,121If Madlib was a baseball player, he wouldn't quite be Frank Thomas, but like Thomas, he would struggle through a bunch of 10-plus pitch at bats and still strike out.
