How did she come to power? I can't recall any of her musical output being decent, and her acting career is nothing to write home about either. Although, strangely, I liked "Swept Away" which puts me in a tiny minority I know. Maybe I'm just an old romantic.b,121b,121She did set up Maverick which seems to have done well, so maybe she's just financially very astute?

I recall seeing her do a turn at the WAG in Soho, circa 84. Damn, was it really almost a quarter of a century ago?b,121I remember being deeply unimpressed (and drunk) and thinking the scant hype in the Face and ID as being wholly unjustified.b,121Then 'Holiday' came out and it was a great pop record.b,121b,121At that point I would have put money on Jellybean Benitez having the more successful career.b,121b,121Which is why I don't gamble anymore.

b,121b,121Didn't her Madgesty "Smirk his burn", as they say in Hull, to get ahead?

  • Alrightyb,121b,121Another Bi-Yearly Question/Threadb,121b,121During her run, everytime u thought she was some pop trash she came back and upped the ante. At least w/ just one song. b,121b,121Her first album is dirty pop genius. There was NO WHITE GIRL doin what she was doin when she first came out.b,121b,121No she cant sing, she not that beautiful, but props to still workin her mojo in 2008. b,121b,121I even fusk w/ that Ray Of Light shit.b,121b,121Pop Music Before Madonna and POP Music After Madonna......DILL

b,121b,121Nah,Debbie Gibson was for Acid washed jeans Becky's in AnywhereFuskTown USA.b,121b,121Madonna was reppin a visual style/attitude that was "the illusion" of the NYC "underground" Club scenes. The Music was Watered down dance from a dude who knew his shit.b,121b,121Black Girls and other chicks cloned her style. The real club chicks (NOT BECKYS) were already doin this before Madonna. Shit exploded.

  • I abandoned ship by True Blue and returned w/ Ray Of Light.

  • Lucious knows whats up, a very apt critique of her strengths & weaknesses.b,121b,121I was interested to read about this photo:b,121 b,121Apparently the much coppied black bangle/band overdose was the photographers idea, and the jewelery belonged to his wife.

b,121b,121Martika was still Maria Marrera or whatever her name was, doing her thing on "KIDS Incorporated". Debbie Gibson hadn't come out with anything when "Holiday" dropped.b,121b,121I liked "Holiday" because as I've said before, it was a fun-sounding song and I initially thought it was Deniece Williams. Then "Everybody" got a bit of airplay and I liked that. It was after "Everybody" that MTV started to show "Burning Up".b,121b,121She's a good business woman and has used her money wisely, knows how to manipulate the media and the hype that surrounds her. Obviously she has done well. That doesn't take away from the good music that she has put out.

She used to have great boobs. But everything she's done in the last 15 years has been complete ass.b,121b,121

I wasn't being serious with those suggestions, you should note.b,121b,121Yeah, I'd ride for "Holiday". And "Express Yourself". But why didn't folks cop the real clubness rather than the the illusion of the NYC "underground" Club scenes? (was that because it was hard for teenage boys to crack one off to the Weather Girls?)b,121b,121And then there are the crimes beyond imagining - "Hanky Panky"? ALL-TIME LOW OF THE HARMONIC SERIES.

  • Not that I ride for Madonna, but this thread is embarrassing. Not only because someone is failing to see her appeal to worldwide audience, but because they're actually worrying about it almost 25 years after the fact.

b,121b,121yeah, and I always thought of her as a complete fabrication. I mean her constant "re-inventing" herself, just basically jumping on the bandwagon of what's new/next to stay in the game.

Ray of light was good, and that song she did for austin powers I really really really liked when it came out. Beautiful Stranger. Yeah, those are good.

Do we have any 80's club dj's on here? retired? Crates were filled with her schitt.b,121b,121I personally like the "Burning Up/Physical Attraction 12", and so do the girls/beckys/drunks at the parties/clurbs.

  • are folks really co-signing Madonna? b,121b,121LE EWEF!

b,121b,121Debbie and Martika were after. Lulu was way before and didn't even have the same sound, unless she had an early-'80s dancepop past that I didn't know about. The one "who did Playboy"...Tiffany? She was a few years after Madonna too.b,121b,121Madonna still sounds like shit, though, I ain't defending her...but everybody you mentioned was either before or after she established herself.

b,121b,121Well, she is still around, so I guess she's still a threat to somebody. It's not like the guy asked us to explain Laura Branigan or Taylor Dayne...
