My understanding of the term is that it refers to the late sixties/early seventies Blue Note/Prestige organ funk sound.
The line between tepid fun and tacky funk is a thin one.
It's strange, after grabbing all that stuff in my earlier record buying days and eventually growing bored of them, thing've come full circle and now I really dig those groove holmes, charles earland, houston person, etc, records. Even some of the boring covers sound good to me nowadays...
I don't think you can make a blanket statement like that. All of the latin music you post sounds like cornball schitt to me, but I know it has some value to someone.
Are you really a defender of the vapid fonk? It's like the worst of tacky funk and tepid funk combined and putrefied.

I don't think you can make a blanket statement like that. All of the latin music you post sounds like cornball schitt to me, but I know it has some value to someone.
Are you really a defender of the vapid fonk? It's like the worst of tacky and tepid funk combined and putrefied.
I will also defend tacky funk. To me it's bassically like this: all of -- or a majority of these dudes were badass musicians. We all love the way records from the late 60's/early 70's sonically sound on labels like Blue Note, Prestige, etc. So this is how an umpteenth cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" by Jack McDuff on The Heatin' System, still sounds undeniably hot to me, even though one might classify it as "tepid funk". I mean, I'm not exactly on ebay paying top dollar for these titles, but everytime I find one in a discount bin in vg+ condition, I'm usually happy with what I hear.
dung histrionics.- you just played yourself...again son i take it you are not to bright, worldly or diverse besides its a ny thang you could never understand

I'll ride for the vapid fonk. The best thing I can say about those latin turds is that I like the way Cal Tjader spells his name. All that schitt sounds like the theme song to "I Dream of Jeannie" to me.

That's like the musical equivalent of saying somebody is butt-ugly but has a nice personality.
I'm sorry, but good musicianship doesn't get but so far. If you don't have good songs to begin with, "chops" don't always save the day. No offense, but I never quite understood that line of thinking.

I'm not the one calling them tacky, I'm defending these "tepid funk" records...

Absolutely. Just depends on what you consider good songs. I mean, if you feel that most of these jazz/funk titles on Prestige or Blue Note were full of awful songs played by good musicians, then yeah, their having chops wouldn't save the album. But personally, I think at least 2 out of the 4 or 5 songs on your average jazz/funk burner on Blue Note/Prestige are great tracks. I dunno, I like that shit. lol...
Shouldn't the monthly (weekly?) "Look at me, I'm shitting on soul-jazz, my taste is superior" thread be a sticky here as well as on ebaydermy?
Please make up your minds about this tacky/tepid/vapid funk/fonk/jazz business. Is it Prestige organ terds with versions of "Close To You", Sir James McKnightley and his Giblet Munchers doing "Ham Hocks pt. umpteen" or Mass Production LPs from '79 with funkonauts that go "yeeeeowww"? There seems to be some confusion.
You know the point at which you get bored listening to any Keb Darge compilation? Whatever is playing then, that song is tacky funk. The funk which you could happily live without ever hearing again.

i am w/ this...
i have no idea what TEPID FUNK means... obv LIKE EVERY GENRE, there are some so so funk tunes... but from what 10-15 period of "funk" does this tepid funk refer to?
but the idea that people are too hip for soul-jazz is weak... not b/c soul jazz is so Frickin' great, but it just seems on some phoney bullshit... WOWYOUARE THE TRENDSETTER IN HATING SOUL JAZZ IN FACT YOU HATED IT BACK WHEN I LIKED IT!

For the record, I like a lot of the Prestige/Blue Note jazz-funk records as well, with their pop/soul covers and so on. My favorite cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" is Boogaloo Joe Jones's, and I think Gene Ammons did a hell of a job on Linda Ronstadt's "Long Long Time," to name two Prestige-ous examples.
I guess, like I stated earlier, I just never got it with that whole "tepid album/brilliant musicanship" kinda deal. I know musicians like to single out good playing on mediocre records (just ask any Chet Atkins fan), but for me I'm all about the entire effect - songs, chops, the whole deal.
For what it's worth, the first time I ever remember reading the term "tacky funk" is was in an Anthony Pearson listing for an O'Donnell Levy lp. "Tacky funk with a naked ass" or something like that.
I think Prestige organ burners, etc are the true definition.

Aha. I stand corrected. i always called that genre "monkeygrinder" in my head. Can we get a ruling then on the tacky people who play funk records genre?

A Silent Dave design 1998-2006 >>...
i take it you are not to bright, worldly or diverse
besides its a ny thang
you could never understand
I'll ride for the vapid fonk. The best thing I can say about those latin turds is that I like the way Cal Tjader spells his name. All that schitt sounds like the theme song to "I Dream of Jeannie" to me.
Ha! You have a deal, Rey.
You need to get into random rap.
The songs are tacky, but the dudes who recorded it are badass musicians?
That's like the musical equivalent of saying somebody is butt-ugly but has a nice personality.
I'm sorry, but good musicianship doesn't get but so far. If you don't have good songs to begin with, "chops" don't always save the day. No offense, but I never quite understood that line of thinking.
Works for me.
i am w/ this...
i have no idea what TEPID FUNK means... obv LIKE EVERY GENRE, there are some so so funk tunes... but from what 10-15 period of "funk" does this tepid funk refer to?
but the idea that people are too hip for soul-jazz is weak... not b/c soul jazz is so Frickin' great, but it just seems on some phoney bullshit... WOWYOUARE THE TRENDSETTER IN HATING SOUL JAZZ IN FACT YOU HATED IT BACK WHEN I LIKED IT!
Keb Darge ain't tacky. To me.
Gilles Peterson[/b], on the other hand,
For the record, I like a lot of the Prestige/Blue Note jazz-funk records as well, with their pop/soul covers and so on.
I think Prestige organ burners, etc are the true definition.
Aha. I stand corrected. i always called that genre "monkeygrinder" in my head.
Can we get a ruling then on the tacky people who play funk records genre?
maybe "overalls" or "bunion funk" or "pts funk"
