How'd you compare it to her other LP?

This one seemed to be more "country" than Soul View Now!
which ultimately makes me prefer that one over this, but I still
consider this to be an excellent album, her voice is just too good.

I think her LP on Money/Abet is my favorite of all, though.

Countdown to Faux_Rillz telling us how good-looking Ms. Swann is:

    10 ... 9 ... 8 ...

She is dimetastic on that cover.

  • Speaking of Soul LP Cover Dimepieces, Me and The One Bellcity were marveling over Eloise Laws earlier:

I have been trying to get a copy of Swann's LP on Money off a collector who I've been buying from for a while, he's still not selling.

    Hell yeah.

Agree w/ SOI that the Money LP is the best of the three.

The Abet press can usually be found for a little cheaper,
and is generally a better pressing, too, although I say that
having only seen a thin later Money pressing, don't know if
there is an earlier, heavier pressing on Money as well.

Hmmm...I wouldn't consider my Money press of this album thin, but it's still not thick enough to pass the wobble test.

    You can have it back.

Gotcha...I always get thrown when the same artist releases multiple copies of self-titled albums (see Tim Maia on Polydor for worst case example).

Well, that was the Brasilian way, back then. See: Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, etc.

I love her first album and am extremely geeked to have a clean one in the shop right now.

Downside, because her career is so thorough and her later albums so common, this is a popular candidate for the ol' "yo! I used to see this for $2 everywhere!"

I always thought the S/T was second.

    Now I'm just hella confused.

    According to these folks: http://www.melingo.com/thesoulnet/staton.htm

...it goes "I'm Just a Prisoner," "Stand By Your Man," then the self-titled LP. But the tracklisting on that site doesn't match other tracklistings I've seen for her S/T album, plus the years are off by 7!

JP: Is this the same S/T LP you're talking about?

No, she had a self-titled one on Fame, distributed by UA.

I have all three right in front of me and can assure you that the order of release I posted above is correct.

And I'll second that order. The s/t on UA was kind of a compilation, at that. The late Fame label and logo on the cover are giveaways.

Here's a handy rule of thumb: if a record by your fave old-school soul act came out after '75, chances are it's gonna be a disco record.

I don't blame you, I have a cutoff switch for disco too. I'll ride for Candi Staton as well, but that gutless "Young Hearts Run Free" mess has got to go. Fame Studios forever!

Diss disco and you diss yourself!

I'm on Pickwick's side with this one. In my opinion, Candi Staton had one of the top three soul voices ever. It's a shame to see her changing her game and ditching Muscle Shoals when she switches to WB.

Yes to Faux's opinion. The album is stunningly anemic considering the potential.

And yes, the non-album 45 by the Fame Gang is pretty good:

    Doh!

    Fame 1801: Travis Wammack - s/t

Fame 181: Clarence Carter - 60 Minutes With Clarence Carter

I have never picked up that Clarence Carter, how is it?

and I don't think I've even heard of the Travis Wammack, anyone got a review?

I ride for that Travis Wammack LP.

Not gonna be everyone's thing, but about
as soulful as a southern rock LP can get.
Charged-up cover of "Funk #49" and a surprisingly
good version of the FAME standard "You Better Move On."

... and the Clarence Carter is good, I think he has
a couple more on Fame from the early 70's, maybe they
come post-UA distro? The CC albums are on some grown &
sexy bluesy soul tip. I think maybe the ones after this
are on ABC but recorded at FAME, like this one:

From 1974, which is quite good, with the soul epic "On Your Way Down"
