Just for clarification sake. I am saying that those records in good condition sell for $4-8. Dollar bin in my mind is stuff that, even in mint, will never get more than 8 bits, you know Hall and Oates or Emmylou Harris joints. Perhaps, I making to fine a point but I doubt seriously anyone here is selling a good condition revolver for a buck. The market certainly bears more.
It wasn't me who started the thread, but I assumed that "best dollar-bin rekkids" MEANS "best dollar-bin rekkids." I didn't think it got to the place where we'd be splitting hairs over "mint condition" vs. "chewed-up condition," or whatever.
And while the condition wasn't pristine, I've definitely seen Hendrix, Cream, the Beatles, Sabbath and that other album mentioned in dollar racks, so...
Best dollarbin rock Lps -- this is different than the above -- Hunky Dory ain't no dollarbin!!! Led Zeppelin III, yes. Beggars Banquet, no. Elvis Costello, yes.
I just off loaded a bunch of my rock stuff to 2 'rockcentric' record stores, the ones in there that I paid 1 dollar for (and got much more for) included:
Blondie- Autoamerican Nilsson- Son of Schmilsson- Beach Boys- Good Vibrations Talking Heads- True Stories- Emmylou Harris- Evangeline- Devo- Are we not men- Joe Walsh-The smoker you drink- David Bowie-Scary Monsters- The Housemartins- The people who grinned- Crowded House- Crowded House- Creedence Clearwater Revival-Pendulum Creedence Clearwater Revival-Cosmos Factory Creedence Clearwater Revival-Bayou County John Lennon- Mind Games Montrose- Montrose- Van Halen-Van Halen- The Police-Synchronicity (Blue vinyl) Rainbow- Difficult to cure The best of Buffy Sainte-Marie (Dbl vinyl) Sky- Five (Dbl vinyl) Poison-Open up and say ahh The numbers- The numbers Manos Negra- Puta???s Fever Kiss-Dynasty The Police- Zenyatta Mondatta Van Halen- OU812 Modern English- Pillow Lips John Mellencamp- The Lonesome Jubilee
I got around 90 bucks (went thru 2 stores)
although I included 2 REM vinyls and a STP picture 12inch (the only shit I piad more than a buck for)
McCartney: Ram Beach Boys: Surfs Up Neil Young: Everybody Knows Grateful Dead: Workingman's Dead Bowie: Hunky Dory
just cause everyone seems to be in an uproar, i will state that Surfs Up is probably the only one that i have never seen for a buck... for bowie, i find that greatest hits records and Young Americans are the only ones of his pre-1976 records that regularly show up in the dollar bin... Everybody Knows is def. a dollar bin classic...
my first 5 that came to mind...
1. aerosmith- rocks 2. paul revere and the raiders- just like us 3. roxy music- greatest hits 4. credeence- cosmo's factory 5. jimi hendrix- smash hits
um, if i did not allow myself the two greatest hits records, i'd include:
6. kinks- kinda kinks (the "marble arch" pressing is def a dollar record...) 7. iron butterfly- inna gadda da vida
regional dollar records is def a great phenomenon... when i lived in San Diego, i got Forever Changes for a buck and passed up other dollar copies... in the east coast, it's a tough find... whenever i go up to montreal, euro stuff, like say the James Last records w/ breaks are all over every dollar bin...
1. robert palmer - sneakin' sally through the alley 2. steely dan - aja 3. blood, sweat & tears - 3 4. led zeppelin - II 5. chicago transit authority - chicago transit authority
A dollar-bin rock classic I forgot to mention...[/b]
I am SO not lying.
"She told me a story about free milk and a cow She said 'no huggy or kissy till I get a wedding vow'"[/b]
Georgia Satellites???
Don't see why not. Those first two Elektra elpees DO turn up dirt cheap...never got around to buying their other albums, but this debut long-player here still holds up, despite the dated 1980's production.
ya gotta love soulstrut...started this thread about kick ass three-chord cheapies and got a roundtable discussion about the market and its changes, and the time tested lesson of "buy low sell high", and probably the first mention of the Georgia Sattelites on the strut...I heart soulstrut
all purchased from the "dollar bin" at real RECORD stores
monkees - head blue cheer - vincebus eruption zz top - eliminator nilson - scmillson paul mccartney & wings - band on the run
Maybe so, but the first two are not "dollar" records. If there were clean copies in the dollar bin, the store was cheating themselves out of $10-$30, no? I got $50 for a clean foil cover copy of HEAD.
Yeah, there are WORKED copies of the first Blue Cheer all over the place, but I don't think I've ever found a clean copy for less than $10. It's a record that people seem to almost universally want money for.
What do I know though? I apparently live in a fantasy world where Astral Weeks and East Bay Grease grow on trees...

Sure aren't! I wasn't gonna say anything, 'cause I didn't want to come off like part of a Roundtable Discussion On The Science Of Dollar Bins, but Soul On Ice essentially said what I was thinking. Understand, just 'cause you found it for a dollar doesn't make it a dollar-bin record. If it were, then you'd see it cheap all the time. I found my copy of Vincebus Eruptum in a dollar bin in 1994, and you can bet I never saw it that cheap since. (Or before.) Even though this was a popular LP in its' time, you're more likely to find a copy of the "Summertime Blues" 45. This ain't some common rekkid like the Georgia Satellites we're talkin' 'bout here! (((grin)))
As far as the Monkees, generally anything after their TV show went off the air (starting with Head, from late '68) turns up less frequently.

Me neither cuz its not a dollar bin record. When I think "dollar bin" record I don't think "$10 to $15 dollar ebay record".
Billy Joel, Alan Parsons, and Tanya Tucker.. you find a Surfs Up amidst that garbage grip and flip you will make 9 eagles.
I find all of the post Capitol lp's in dollar bins here frequently.
It definitely all depends on where you live though...
