Reggae soul covers? (RR)

They're killing it for me right now. The Soul Jazz comp is one of the strongest I've heard in awhile, for any genre. Or is there something better (and how can I get it?)

All are excellent introductions to the reggae soul covers. A lot of this stuff has been re-issued, bootlegged and comp'd, so keep your eyes on sites like Labcabin and dusty groove.

While Sound Bwoy may be well selected, people might want to spend their money
on comps that actually paid someone for the right to use their music...
    or not.

Either way that bootleg ish is

  • There are a couple of those Trojan "box sets" (the ones with the cardboard sleeves) that focus on covers, much of it soul...

Tough call between this version and the Derrick Harriott 12. Ellis one is sweeter, but the Harriott has the extended dubbed out percussion.

    What else we got?

Stop In The Name Of Love
    Only You
    Ain't No Sunshine
    Be Thankful

I have this reggae soul mix that I've been procrastinatin' on for a while and contains none of the above, mostly originals rather than US covers. I need to get on it again.

I have a version of Betty Wright's Tonight is the Night by Claudette Miller and Conscious Minds that I like a lot... I'll see if I have a soundclip around.

    Very nice.

Since we are a dozen posts into a soulstrut genre thread, it's probably bout time to totally derail it with tenuous suggestions like lists of non soul cover reggae tracks, or even non-reggae soul covers like this Jackie Wilson Calypso.

These are great. Can I get artist for each song?

If telling it like it is, is hating....
    Guilty as charged.
If you get behind ripping people off that's the real son.

I don't know what kind of baggage you have with the hommie Sh*ne but this is some bullshit. I mean, do you have any idea how hard it is to license obscure AMERICAN music, let alone Jamaican? Do you think you yourself could successfully license the majority of the records on that comp? Would it be better if those records remained unknown?

I really doubt anyone made a boatload of cash off status breaks, as it certainly wasn't any kind of mass release... and I am sure you own a good amount of unlicensed reggae in your collection... and I am sure you're aware of the murky licensing arrangements in the Jamaican music industry... so what is your issue exactly?

  • a: why focus on the negative side of that shit? that comp series is loooong gone.

b: why put somebody on blast on a board that his Frickin' friends write on?

c: those comps are totally wicked, and to this day IMO nobody has really outdone them. if anybody has one of those disgusting bootlegs for sale please PM.

pulllease don't try to point any fingers at me for defending a dope record series. you are coming off like a dancehall monitor.

At the risk of sounding greedy, if anyone can post that Isleys cover I would love that. I'm going to try to cop the vinyl in Berkeley on Tuesday, but if I can't locate it, I'm going to have to go online. I need that in my life.
