    Richard Kern's been around forever.

He's of the NY art scene that somehow
sells porn as a form of high art, without
really altering it from typical porn much,
except for his retro stylings and lite-bondage
touches - and the fact that he is a good photographer.

Not that I'm mad at him - I had the coffee table book
"Beautiful Girls" at least 10 years ago. He is definitely
a talented photographer, but I also don't see his work as
the kind of thing you can throw out there on a public forum
and expect people to be into it. He's a fetish artist, which
by nature will rub a majority of people the wrong way.

A "NSFW" would have at least been welcome, I'm sure.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of his either. Years ago my friend & I saw some "No Wave era art" exhibition and they showed some short films he'd done with Lydia Lunch (I think) and my buddy was all like "You know man, it's like porn but it's also like art, dude".

  • Thanks dude!!!

Art/Porn.... whatever.... Kern's a good photographer and I like his taste in women.

That whole barely-legal-old-perv-taking-pictures thing isn't for me.

Kern comes off as a only-slightly-less-creepy version of Terry Richardson. Must be some Vice Mag thing.

And on that note: it dawned on me I haven't seen an issue of Vice in at least a year since Ithe only place I ever got copies from was the Groove Merchant when I was still living in the Bay. And Kern really reminded me what always annoyed me about Vice and the culture it represents: it's the endless fetishization of the 20s.

On one level, I get it - I work on a college campus, I'm surrounded by people in their late teens and early 20s and even as I get older, they'll always be the same age (this is not a happy state of affairs, long-term).

But part of the beauty of getting older is basically getting older. That "mature and sexy" thing is crazy real in terms of what I find fascinating and enjoyable about people who are older than the Zack Braff demogrpahic. And to me, the whole Vice shtick is stuck in this permanent state of arrested development...as if being 22 is the greatest thing that will ever happen in your life, when really, it's kind of an awkward, pre-adult age that most just stumble through. It's really not worth lionizing.

but there's definitely a case to be made for the other side as well.

Ha - naw dude, I get it, I get it. It's just tiring when it's the entire worldview. My rant is more at the tunnel vision of Vice and similar sites than the general fever pitch around 20 somethings.

Actually, Vice is like my experience working as a prof - the world is sells never gets any older even as I am. And that wouldn't be quite as bad if it wasn't for the awareness that the guys who run the mag are basically my age too and they're not getting any younger and then one day, they're going to wake up and be like Kern or Richardson and that's not a pretty picture.

Except for the R those photos are kinda creepy. Vice has never made any sense to me and I'm of that demographic. It's always just looked like a lot of hipsters doing coke.

But who's it for? Less beautiful twenty-somethings or salacious old men?

  • I thought the Kern vids linked were cool and the ladies were sexy. Never seen, only read about his 80s work. Seems like a more high-brow Larry Clark.

Kern's videos in the 80s were interesting in that teenage goth kind of way - LungLeg was entertaining for a minute, but watching Henry Rollins and Lydia Lunch in a sexual situation made me feel like losing my lunch. I like the scrappy looks of his models, but it's still a pretty narrow scope as far as beauty/sexy is concerned, so it gets boring fast imo.

Richarson is kinda embarassing - it's good to hang with all kinds of people of all ages, but you gotta wonder why he can't get with women his own age, or rather, why women his own age don't want to get with him.

Having seen Clark introduce Wassup Rockers, dude confirmed he is every bit the creepy mess he appears to be.

I can see what you're saying - but at the same time - the kind of girls you're saying a mag like Vice flaunts are real girls. As far as I know - there ain't too much photoshopping or any of that nonsense going on. Kern's photos are undoctored - it's not some BS like you see in any of the nicer fashion mags - these girls aren't usually modeling for a living. Me like.
