Yep - the guy that's been managing him, posted up on Fryer Mantis.

  • Wow, definitely one of my favorites. Rest in peace.

Wow, the guy was a great. He took in James Brown for a while when they were little kids and was a constant companion and married Vicki Anderson/Myra Barnes along the way as well. He put out some great great music, even after he split with Brown for a while. Sad loss for all.

  • proof?
like Belson said, its from a reliable source, his manager announced it...he just died a few hours ago...nothings to the wire yet.

Its a sad day for soul music.

    Hey,

If this news is true, I'm saddened by hearing it. I've been a fan of Mr. Byrd's music since childhood growing with James Brown music. One of my first 45's as a child was "Keep on Doin' What You're Doin'" on Brownstone. R.I.P., Mr. Byrd, your voice and legacy are unmistakable.

    Peace,

...and Joe Zawinul just yesterday... damn

  • I guess bobby byrd and vicki anderson lived down in san diego. When James played the street scene a couple years ago, both bobby and vicki joined him on stage. bobby joined him on stage doing punchlines in songs like it was 1971 again. completely not missing a beat, it was one of the happiest memories i have because i knew that i wouldn't have the chance to see it happen again.

Man, outgrowing your heros is rough. I heard Bobby was battling cancer, but didn't know how bad it was. My utmost love and respect for his family. It's morbidly good to know that Bobby will have James's back in that heavenly chorus line.

Here's a duet with his wife... Def a favorite...

  • Not to disrespect Byrd's memory, and not trying to "son" Hookup, but I think this is Bobby Day (of "Rockin' Robin" fame). He also recorded off and on as "Bobby Byrd", and the two always get confused for each other in discographies. I think the JB Bobby Byrd would have been a Famous Flame when this single came out.

    very early Bobby Byrd:

Yeah, the whole Bobby Byrd/Bobby Day/Bob Relf/Bob & Earl thing
is incredibly confusing - but I think you are right about The
Sounds 45 - it's most likely Bobby Day.
