Me and my best friend Julio went to see Sabbath perform at Tower Theatre in 1989, at the tender age of 15. We drank 40s of Colt .45 (that a bum got for us) on the El and smoked a pack of Kools that I stole from my mom outside of the theatre. Sabbath was performing with the fake Ozzy (was it Dio?) but the walls of sound still knocked me on my ass. That's when Julio pointed out to me that Tony Iommi was missing one of his fingers.

    The Wizard INDEED...

We then went back to Julio's crib, where we raided his folks liquor cabinet. We sat in the basement drinking Old Grand Dad while Julio taught me how to play the "Iron Man" lick on his older brother's guitar.

It's all been downhill ever since...

    that was an awesome story.

sabbath pretty much kicks ass. required listening as a teenager IMO.

Point being, there's only one Sabbath, and that's with Ozzy. Anything else is just weak. Van Hagar, anyone?

Asking "What's essential Sabbath?" is akin to asking "What's essential organs?"

Do you own any black sabbath
i mean, i dig Sabbath and all, but is it necessary to own their albums is you're a music fan? just wondering what you were implying

Yeah I would actually say it is necessary to own, or have owned (and listened to) Black Sabbath classic LPs

If you don't like the Sabbath you don't like the rock music! And if you don't like the rock music then you're just a pansy ass. Fucking lame ass white guys who are like, "I only really like soul and funk. Check out my sideburns, hey let's go find some emo asian girls" And suspect ass Black guys who are like "fuck rock music that's that headbanger white dude shit dawg" YOU ARE ALL FUCKING LOSERS

Damn me and Justin are drinking the same haterade! I have been in the car for 7 out of the last 24 hours, so I am going to go now.

All of the first six albums (up to Sabotage) are completely essential. They are definitely ONE[/b] of the greatest rock band who ever was. And I agree with whoever said that if you don't like Sabbath you can EAT SHIT.

    Essential Sabbath:

My dude is high school was Paul. Paul's folks lived in an apartment and they didn't have much money, so Paul slept in the walk-in closet. Get this. In the closet, he had 1) his bed (which got rolled up and stuck in the rafters during "daytime socializing" hours), 2) two Fender amps, 3) an SG and one of those deathray BC Rich guitars, and 4) his entire tape collection. Not to mention all his clothes and the typical shit teenage dudes have (porn?).

Paul used to sit in the closet, all stuffy and sweaty and smelling like a fucking 1,000 dirty gym socks, just rocking the fuck out on his guitar. It was loud in there. If dinner was ready, his moms would come and flick the light switch (which was outside the closet) a couple times. Paul would notice the lights flickering, cut the amp, and come out for dinner. Shit was awesome.

Paul showed me all the metal riffs. "Whiplash", "Iron Man", "Angel of Death", etc. He was by far the coolest guy ever. His dad was an old school hesher. Drove a muscle car, worked construction, and had the ENTIRE Sabbath catalog on cassette. The original cassettes too, with the funny colors. Paul's dad would drive me home after hesh-sessions in the closet, and he'd be all, "You kids wanna listen to 'Children of the Grave'?" Yeaaaaaaa!

This post makes it pretty clear that I was a total loser growing up. But I blame Ozzy. And don't front on Dio-led Sabbath. That little witchy motherfucker had the hex on lock. "Devil woooooooman!" He's got that sorcery vibe where Ozzy just had bat heads. Two different bands, but don't discount the diminutive demon!

PUTTIN' THE DIO BACK IN DIPLO[/b]

  • Lately, very few of the SS posts grab my attention. HOWEVER, the essential Black Sabbath LP's simply cannot be overlooked by yours truly.

Hard to classify in order of sheer greatness. but here goes::

Paranoid[/b] - "Planet Caravan, War Pigs, Electric Funeral, Iron Man, Hand of Doom, Fairies Wear Boots", etc. How unfuckwithable can you get?

Sabotage[/b] - Such a heavy and underrated masterpiece. You got "Symptom of the Universe, Hole in the Sky, Megalomania, the Writ" and one or two filler cuts. Brilliantly heavy and essential Sabbath!

Black Sabbath[/b] - Yes, of course. This album is of almost historical significance. The embryonic stages of heavy metal captured in full glory on this here debut rekkid. Still shedding the jammy blues meanderings from their previous incarnation (Earth). The face-melting heaviness of title track "Black Sabbath" scared the living shit outta me & my hesher friends hanging out at the cemetery, smokin bud and trying not to run screaming like little girls when this came blarin' out the boombox. Being high in a cemetery after midnight listening to "Black Sabbath" is no fuckin joke when you're 14. Shit, I'm a grown-ass man & would still prolly be all shook if it went down all over again tonight. Oh yeah, "the Wizard", "N.I.B.", "Sleeping Village", "Wasp", etc. So evil, so necessary.

Vol.4[/b] - Quite possibly one of the greatest album covers of all time. I could probably paint this from memory what with all the times I painted this on the back of some lucky kid's denim jacket. The production on this album is so warm, so perfect. None of that tinny shit that slightly dilutes the heaviness Master of Reality. This record just feels good to listen to. it's fuckin heavy man, but with a warm comforting aesthetic underneath. "Snowblind", "Wheels of Confusion", "Supernaut", "Tomorrow's Dream" and yeah, that corny one that Shig likes (Dude, you don't like David Lynch?! WTF?). Anyway, shit is ill. Worth owning for the album cover alone.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath[/b] - Has this one been brought up yet in this thread? If not, y'all need to go Guzzo's house and listen to Off the Wall, cuz that's exactly the level you're playing at right now. Another one that's worth it for the cover alone. The bad that comes alive & shit. Dude shoulda known better than to buy the 666 headboard with the skull on top. Sure, the bitches love it, but dude, see what happens? Damn!
Sabbath got into some questionable territory here with the introduction of synthesizers to their perfectly realized heavy metal template. It works out OK though, doesn't really mess anything up. Doesn't make it any heavier either. It's just kinda there but you can't help but feel that the synths are an ominous hint to the beginning of Sabbath's decline. However, they still come with it and fuck shit up on this album with awesome titles such as: "National Acrobat", "Looking for Today", "Spiral Architect", "Killing Yourself to Live" and of course, the title cut. Don't sleep on this very heavy and underrated piece.

Master of Reality[/b] - I'm sure y'all are sayin "hey bro, what gives? MOR at the bottom of the list?
Well, this is actually my least favorite of the great Sabbath albums. Of course, it's still great & all, but somehow fails to inspire as much as the others. I think the flaw lies in the production. Don't like the way the drums sound and the guitar could have been heavier, darker. Missing some of that doom & gloom sound. The only thing to save it from obscurity is the incredible programme: "Sweet Leaf", "Lord of This World", "Children of the Grave", "Solitude" and holy fuckin shit "Into the Void". Talk about some inspired songwriting on that ish.

OKay, now that that stuff is outta the way, allow me to introduce my pick for honorable mention....

Born Again[/b] - Featuring an album cover so completely ridiculous, it borders on greatness. This came out after Sabbath had been through the wringer. Ozzy left, replaced by Ronnie James Dio (whom I fucking hate) and Bill Ward left, hardly replaced by Vinnie Appice (whom I also fucking hate) and made horrible, horrible music that was a blasphemy to their impeccable legacy. They also used up fantastic album cover ideas on this weaksauce lineup. For example::::

    and this

    Anyway, you get the idea.
Born again, brings Bill ward back to the drumkit and an odd but effective inclusion of Deep Purple's Ian Gillen on vocals. I dunno, man. I love me some Ozzy, but Gillen fills in to great effect on crazy shit like "Zero the Hero", "Trashed", "Stonehenge", "Disturbing the Priest" and the slow burn of "Born Again" (my favorite cut). Next time yer diggin' and you have an extra dollar in your pocket, don't flip past this jawn.

  • Worth owning for the album cover alone.

    Why I can't trust SoulStrut:

    1. Lists of "Essential Black Sabbath Albums" that go no further than nine.
    2. "I never listened to Sabbath until I was 20."
    3. "I'd rather listen to M.O.P."
    4. "I skip over 'Laguna Sunrise."
    5. "Do I really need to own Black Sabbath albums?"
    6. "The track to skip is 'FX'"
    7. More people coming to the defense of 5-string basses than Sabbath.

Dudes, it has been implied, and it has been stated. But it must be repeated: IF YOU DO NOT LIKE SABBATH, YOU MOST DEFINITELY DO NOT LIKE ROCK MUSIC.

To wit (with apologies to the Dio era):

    1. FIRST ALBUM (both US & UK pressings so you get their take on Crow's "Evil Woman")
    2. SABOTAGE (if you do not realize this as the masterpiece it is, do us both a favor and never discuss music again)
    3. VOLUME 4
    4. SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH
    5. MASTER OF REALITY
    6. PARANOID
    7. LIVE AT LAST
    8. NEVER SAY DIE
    9. TECHNICAL ECSTACY
    10. BORN AGAIN
    11. TROUBLE'S FIRST ALBUM

Sabbath gave you rock, metal, blues, moog, breaks, demons, xianity, mellotron, stoner soundtracks, fairies in boots, blazing downtempo, bass, mustaches, a bit of finger, bellbottoms, Orange amps... you name it.

Can you say that about Roy Ayers, Michael Jackson, DJ Shadow, Gentle Giant, Stark Reality, or Chamillionaire? Didn't think so. Jesus... you Soulstrutters are really fucking chumps.

The lack of love for Master of Reality is blowing my mind.

If I needed to pick only one Sabbath record I could ever listen to again, it would be that one.

Although, "N.I.B." from the self-titled is probably my jam of jams, just cause I can go "oh yeah!" in perfect synchronization, and it is the headbanginest of all.

Yall seriously know about my Black Sabbath Florida fest. I even had the homie Walter jamming out to some "warning" off of that we sold our soul cassette I paid 45 cents for at a Tampan thrift store. Tooling around the thrifts in 93 degree weather in grampsmobile with nothing to offer me but a cassette player. That cassette was just screaming "buy me buy me fucker." It was the only thing I bought out of a thrift store my whole time down there. Which is quite funny, because literally 10 seconds later some lady comes in and scoops up EVERY cassette in there, and throws em in some box and takes them to the back. I liberated Sabbath, and Sabbath rewarded me. Helped pass the Tampa to Orlando time quite well. Helped pass the dry ass thrift store digging quite well too. 4, maybe 5x on repeat. Cassettes rule. **see below**

But yeah. This was 2 days after listening to the S/T on full blast in the headphones before crashing on grampss's's couch. After Sabbath was over, I couldn't find ANYTHING to follow it with. Blue Cheer was the only thing that came close, but damn. That S/T was just magic like Earth, Wind and Fire's first one. The rest of the albums can be just as consistent, but there's that indescribable element in the S/T that will never be tapped into again.

**when cassettes were rocking, it seemed more music was made for front to back listening burner fest. At least all the cassettes I was buying back in my young days were solid all the way though. There was a real nice element of quality control. We need more front to back mind melters where the fast forward or rewind or skip track button need not exist. chord combination after chord combination that just set it off for you like overhearing some dude say 'random'. "oh snap, 'random'?!?!?! damn, yo!!!"**

    I only had one beer.
    2 sheets to the wind.
    Goodbye now.

    Black Sabbath owns your ass.
If anybody can tell me how to record some Warner Brothers sounding drums, PM me.

I wish to always tap into the indescribables. There is no purpose for pursuing the art if you can't tap into the magic.

My first exposure to Sabbath, was as a 10 year old on a windy/rainy night in a small weird coastal Cornish town in a caravan that my mates sister lived in with her soon to be husband, who later turned out to be a transsexual. My mates mum was a real bible basher, so it all felt a bit naughty and satanic listening to hand of doom on their shitty system. Needless to say that experience has stayed with me and the bassline from hand of doom still flashes me back there. A dose of Sabbath like that is like a hit that you can never rediscover.

THANK YOU Iron Monkey and Marco, you said it all.

My first concert was Sabbath in '83 on the Born Again tour.

Everyone should check out the Calfornia Jam boot, Geezer's got the wah-wah bass, Iommi guitar is tuned down to A- or something, and they go into these long, heavy, extended stoner jams on a couple of cuts.

MASSIVE FUCKING COSIGN... i wouldnt even be making music if it wasnt for black sabbath... they were the first band i ever got into where i was able to actually LEARN all the songs.. and at 15 that is MAD important!!

i have foundness for all eras of sabbath... but this is my master list:

1: Master Of Reality - Into the VOID = greatest / heaviest riff OF ALL FUCKING TIME thus this record is numero uno

2: Vol. 4 - Supernaut is the second heaviest riff OF ALL FUCKING TIME. This record has the greatest guitar sounds ever captured if you ask me

3: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - i love this fucking record, criminally underated

    4: Paranoid - nuff said

5: Sabotage - again CRIMINALY SLEPT ON

    bonus:

ST - too bluesy for me to qualify it as a total masterpiece.. but like all sabbath records the highlights are HIGH

    EXTRA BONUS

Live at the Olympia - Paris 1970
one of the greatest bands of all time caught live in their absolute prime

alright..been buyin sabbath LPs since I was 12 years old...Master of Reality is the best one, hands down, it is the heaviest, has the best songs and the thickest sound..definitely a huge influence on heavy metal. Also, this is a point of contention for a lot of people, but I do not think Sabbath was the first metal band, not by design anyway...true they invented a lot of the ammo that metal bands would use, but first and foremost they were a rock band, that happened to invent much of what metal was...a great fucking rock band, but at the end of the day..a rock band. The first heavy metal band, by design, 100% metal, was Judas Priest..but thats a different thread and nobody will be able to sway my opinion, well, because I am right about that...ok, back to sabbath...the first two and master of reality, and half of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" are their best sides, but this one:

is unfuckwitable...kicks the shit out of Sabotage, Vol 4, Technical Ecstacy, & Never Say Die. Ozzy for the most part is a shitty singer, you cant deny that, he is a one trick pony..true he was an essential element to early Sabbath but for the most part, if you ignore his antics, he his pretty disposable. Geezer wrote the best lyrics and the genius of Sabbath was Tony and Geezer.

Also, the first two solo Ozzy LPs are good only because of Randy Rhoads, if Randy wasnt on the first two solo LPs, they would suck donkey balls...as a metal head I know I am speaking blasphemy, but its true. Fuck Ozzy(doesnt help that he became a fucking idiot sell out with his "look at me I am retarded" TV show and Pepsi ads). ok Sabbath LPs:

    1. Master of Reality

    2. Paranoid

    3. s/t

    4. Mob Rules

    5. half of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the song, features possibly my favorite vocal performance in rock history. It's like 2 different songs in one.

My favorite Sabbath album...Master of Reality.
