i would never in one billion years say that that marvin gaye record and that mj record is essential modern soul. i would still classify those as soul records by soul singers.
look... before you fucking kids get online and start throwing around terms and confusing young motherfuckers that dont know shit on this board about styles of music and genres of music LEARN THE FUCKING MUSIC FIRST... dont fucking pretend you know shit because youve been diggin it for 6 months and bought 50 records that came out in certain time period...
jesus christ... i fucking hate soulstrut most of the time at this point...
maybe im just cranky because i havent eaten any food yet today but seriously...
AM I WRONG? IS MARVIN GAYE CONSIDERED MODERN SOUL?

why would you classify those as modern soul?
Why isn't it modern soul?
late 70's/ early 80's soul LP with all the contemporary sounds of the day and not too much of that 4 on the floor disco syncopated beat.
Everyone seems to have a different definition for this genre but I've made mine known several times. basically if its good late 70's early 80's soul music with some serious R&B vibes to it as opposed to disco I consider it modern soul.
why do you call William Devaughn and Lou Courtney modern soul then?
honestly I don't but I feel that they are the forerunners to that sound. they were slick and mellow, but not in a bad way. Both their LP's from '74 are essential

Everyone seems to have a different definition for this genre .
BECAUSE THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS MODERN SOUL!!!!
homework motherfuckers, shit is called doing homework. not just getting high, you gotta do homework. knowledge is power.
yeah, the term "modern soul" gets mangled on soulstrut, big deal, that doesn't mean the scene which named this style never happended. shit is real. collections exist. records which were once common are now fucking peace. why? because the mythical modern soul scene was playing them in the 80's when that sound actually was "modern" soul. captain crunch.

Tom,
I think ol' EdPowers was just doing a little of the kidding. Dude blasts modern soul mixes in the SUV while I pack bowls in the passenger seat. If this was 1982 best beleive J****l would be rocking the suit n' curl
sound files will be tough for lp's. if you want to hear some nice 45's go to raresoulman.co.uk and manship has a page called rarest of the rare, 35 pages with soundclips. not all modern soul stuff, but enough to justify hitting it. also do the same thing on funk45.com i noticed somebody has been listing modern grail items there.
also check soul45.org keb darge has (3) modern sets which are lethal. some corny northern sounding stuff, but mainly top shelf modern.
for boogie stuff (12s mainly), check out danceclassics.net ed's site in spain. some serious eddie smurphy stuff on that page, but quality does lurk there as well.

I only got 3 Gap band LP's IV, II, and Magicians Holiday from 1974 on the Shelter label. Young P*trick, I'd recommend you look for the latter.
