That's actually a tabla tarang. I'm pretty sure it's either eight or sixteen dayan (the right side of the tabla pair) all tuned in a scale. There are very few people in the world who can play it, and I think there is only one living master: Pt. Kamalesh Maitra. He has a fly record out on Smithsonian that has a book with extensive explanation of Tabla Tarang.
