Saw this at the local starbucks I need to buy a copy.
Yeah, I did too. Fuck that though, this is pretty incredible.
KCRW played "A Man Needs a Maid/Heart of Gold" with just him playing piano and it was
I guess alot of these songs went on to become Harvest so to hear them raw like this is pretty heavy.
8CD/2DVD box set scheduled for a November release. The Massey Hall show and the one that was released before is a part of the "Performance Series" in the Archive series. One can assume (but with NY you never know) that the box set is the "Studio" part of the Archives, which would includes outtakes, alternate takes, all of the albums he recorded but never released, etc.
BTW - my review of Live At Massey Hall 1971[/b] is here if anyone cares to read before buying:

That was a great review. I can't wait to hear this whole thing.
Correct, and this recording was originally going to be a live double album. It was done in support of After The Gold Rush[/b], and was captured because it was a homecoming show. If you get the CD/DVD combo, you're able to see the rough drafts of what he wanted as a double album, as far as splitting it to four sides, the master tape, etc. But when he went to Nashville to record some new material, he liked what he was coming up with there that he pretty much forgotten/abandoned the live album project and headed straight for what would become Harvest[/b].
However, that Massey Show has been heavily bootlegged over the years. The quality has always been "of bootleg quality", so even fans who have had this for years will want to hear this one, recorded directly from the boards.
For me it's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere".
Ooooooooooooooooooooh yeah. 'Cowgirl in the Sand' =
This is black music, man. What you tripping off of?

Hope it doesn't cost a fortune cuz it looks/sounds damn good...
P.S.
neil inspired me to pick up a guitar and play his songs badly
I love this album, too. But i find it totally depressing- not sure why?
i think this live at massey concert is pretty depressing too. but it's damn good
On the Beach is stellar.
Wasn't he pretty depressed when he made it? I don't recall where I heard that/if it is apocrapha, but if true, that may explain it....
the cover would certainly suggest depression.
Made under the influence of "honey slides".
has the fact that neil + rick james were once in a band together already been discussed? anybody got a file?
longtime/first time. its Jasper. I know or kinda know half of you guys on here so I dont really feel like doing some introduction thing (do you guys still do that?) but whats up everybody- no job = lots of free time.
Honey Slides:
In the Neil Young biography 'Shakey', there is a reference to a mysterious concoction known as a 'honey slide' that was heavily consumed during the 'On The Beach' sessions:
"The high was debilitating. 'People passed out,' said Elliot Roberts. 'This stuff was, like, way worse than heroin. Much heavier. Rusty [Kershaw] would pour it down your throat and within ten minutes you were catatonic."
Here's Neil's notorious recipe for "Honey Slides" as he described it at a concert at the Bottom Line Club in New York City, NY, May 16, 1974 while introducing the song "Motion Pictures".
Neil: "Anyway, we're in this hotel room (harmonica), we're trying some honey-slides, you know....You know what a honey-slide is? (voice from audience: Yes!) Honey-slide, mmmmmmn!
You know, poor grade marijuana (he's playing soft guitar all through this... Motion Pictures intro), worse than you get on the street, and you take it and you get your old lady, you know, if you got one, to cook it up on the stove, you know, put that stuff in the grinder, get it real fine, in a frying pan, put it on the stove, turn the heat up a little, wait till the grass just starts to smoke, just a little bit, take it off the heat, don't want to burn it too much (laughter and a few guitar bars), then you take the honey, you know, get a half a glass of honey about this big - I hope you ladies are listening to the recipies tonight - (audience laughter and a few words missing) just heat that honey up until it's slippery, you know, and mix that grass with it, you know the fine grass that you've cooked up just until it started to smoke and you took it off, mix those together and you get a spoon you know (voices from the audience and laughter).
I think you should eat it after that. Just eat a little of it, you know, maybe a spoonful or two, you'll be surprised, it just makes you feel fine... (laughter) That cheap grass is great. You know, in these times, you have to think about prices and things like that (laughter).
Harvest was the first one i got, but this one just took it to another level for me.
"I Am A Child"
I am a child, I'll last a while.
You can't conceive
of the pleasure in my smile.
You hold my hand,
rough up my hair,
It's lots of fun
to have you there.
God gave to you,
now, you give to me,
I'd like to know
what you learned.
The sky is blue
and so is the sea.
What is the color,
when black is burned?
What is the color?
You are a man, you understand.
You pick me up
and you lay me down again.
You make the rules,
you say what's fair,
It's lots of fun
to have you there.
God gave to you,
now, you give to me,
I'd like to know
what you learned.
The sky is blue
and so is the sea.
What is the color,
when black is burned?
What is the color?
I am a child, I'll last a while.
You can't conceive
of the pleasure in my smile.
"Old Man"
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.
Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.
Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.
I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
i love these four lines
"A Man Needs A Maid"
My life is changing
in so many ways
I don't know who
to trust anymore
There's a shadow running
thru my days
Like a beggar going
from door to door.
I was thinking that
maybe I'd get a maid
Find a place nearby
for her to stay.
Just someone
to keep my house clean,
Fix my meals and go away.
A maid. A man needs a maid.
A maid.
It's hard to make that change
When life and love
turns strange.
And old.
To give a love,
you gotta live a love.
To live a love,
you gotta be "part of"
When will I see you again?
A while ago somewhere
I don't know when
I was watching
a movie with a friend.
I fell in love with the actress.
She was playing a part
that I could understand.
A maid. A man needs a maid.
A maid.
When will I see you again?
