I mean, i guess theres the whole self hating OJ oreo cookie stereotype that often gets thrown around on some "keep it real" black empowerment type shit. But I still wish we could leave that whole racial purity shit back with the last generation. To me this is just as racist as some white guy talking about how he hates to see Black guys with white girls. Right? Or is it more like how he hates to see white guys with black girls? Is there a difference? Is there some double standard gender bullshit thrown in there too? Please explain to me how this is less ignorant than some dude bragging about his watch?Not to mention this isnt nearly the first time the posterboy for "concious" rap has said some stupid and potentially hateful shit. I mean, its 2005, get a fucking clue.

I think, historically there is a difference between black guys with white girls and white guys with black girls. The latter has always been acceptible in one way or the other, think Thomas Jefferson. Its funny cause with that Ashton Kutcher remake of Guess Whos Coming to Dinner, they switched it up -- for 2005? Even in movies you still dont see black guys with white girls, though there are tons of the opposite. The only recent exception I can think of is Jungle Fever, buts thats an affair, so I dont think it really counts.
Personally I dont really focus that much on race, but I think the double standard is a historical one.
This reminds me of Oliver Stone's Zebrahead, which had records in it. Anyone, does that vinyl spot exist?

Does he really hate white women? I doubt it cuz they buy his stuff. I think maybe he's hating on Black guys who ONLY date white women cuz they have a bad attitude about black women.
Ultimatley it is silly. Gold diggers, hoochie mama's, guy's with a certian type of women fetish are all over the world. So it's kind of moot. PLus, you never know....plenty of "black" and "white" people have mixed heritage. They just get lumped into one group by narrow minded people. I had a friend who was half white and half black and he would go off if someone insulted either side. Usually it was Black people dissing whitey and he didn't take it.
What's the point in this really. It's like aruguing gay rights with a conservative. People think the way they think.
If concious rap means writing lyrics that reflect a self-awareness and the state of Black America, how is Common out of line?
I'm not trying to justify it, I'm just trying to understand it. You all are just assuming he doesn't like interacial relationships, but do you know that for a fact? I said it was a dumb thing to say no matter what. I just think it's way more complex than you can really cover on a message board with out the speaker contributing.
I've heard so many different reason from people on why black and white shouldn't date, so I would like to know which one Common believes in. They are all pretty pointless no matter what.
I think it boils down to a matter of "words" meaning different "things" to different "people," there is nothing "out of line" about "that."
Now "we" need to "get" the "stick" out of our "ass" and get back to "raer" "talk".
I don't believe Common hates anyone, but I can't fault him for speaking his mind.

If yall are so up in arms about this, why listen to conscious rap at all? It's not like Brand Nubian, Public Enemy, etc said a whole lot of nice things about white people.

I'm not saying this attitude is embraced by everyone. And you can't put the state of White America and Black America up against each other and expect to have a fair comparison. They are two different situations with their own unique complexities.
Here is what I believe Common is addressing:

Its just not a good look. And for as much as common likes to muse on societies ills, hes basicly lumping in a discust for interacial relationships with all the other problems he feels suited to speak on.
I dont think he hates anybody either, but excusing it just because the opinion is out there doesnt make any sense to me. I know what hes saying is nothing new. Racism is mad old. Goes back to the roots of this country, but I still dont think that makes it acceptable.

Not all black people are going to like you, approve of you, or show enthusiasm at the prospect of you becoming members of their family. White people spend five centuries oppressing black people on this continent and when they finally remove their collective knee from black people's collective throat just a little bit wanna get all ass-hurt that not all black people like them.
And this whole idea of imposing the burden of "consciousness" on rappers is lame. Try to figure out for yourself what you feel is right and what you feel is wrong--don't look for a rapper to be your personal moral exemplar.

I would disagree with that. PE pretty much had a policy of only talking specifics and not just going off on a whole group. That's why Griff got kicked out for a while. Cuz he just went off on "Jews" when he should of said specifically who he was talking about.
PE always talked about the government or slave owners or hollywood etc. Specific institutions. I never would have been into them if it was just all "whity sucks". Like how they talked about Jeffery Dhamer didn't have hand cuffs but if it wsa as black child eater he would have been in cuffs. That's the kind of specifics that make a point and don't just offend people.
This topic is about black men with white girls. So I guess there's no problem with acceptance there.

I love PE, but they said their share of wild ignorant shit--they were basically making their whole thing up as they went along. Again, don't look for rappers or any other entertainers to be your personal moral guides.
There are a lot of issues here.
First: Love Knows No Color.
Second racial/sexual politics. This is real and includes many issues:
There is a political/social difference between a man from a dominant race dating a woman from an opressed race and a man from an opressed race dating a woman from a dominant race.
Black men with White women is a major social/political issue in the African American community because there are many more Black Women than men. Black men in America have a very short life span. Young Black men in America are encarcerated at an alarming rate. Thus Black women who want to marry and raise a family with someone who shares their cultural back ground have a very small pool to choose from.
Self hate is another issues.
There are many more that Olive could talk about since he has a PHD or something on the subject.
At the end of the day, who someone loves is not controled by these social/political/racial debates. No one should judge an individuals life.
