Pretty slim pickings around town this week ... still, picked up a couple of decent/interesting joints:
Some decent clean early 90's hip hop 12" out of a dollar bin... 101 Strings has four Animated Egg sessions tracks ... Moog record has a T Rex "Jeepster" cover, and a couple heavy tracks, like "Jungle Juice" - it was 50 cents, as was the Jump LP, which is pretty good glammy power pop on Janus ... Spilt Milk looked like it would be awesome, but was tepid as 2-hour old tea.
Made an infrequent trip to Newbury Comics looking for the Bob & Gene album, but it was sold out, so I copped the Amnesty instead... ...what a fantastic release! Highly recommended, sounds like the Lost Generation on Brunswick with a more raw, stretched-out sound...

It was on Alcatraz Ave. in Berkeley during the 60s/70s. He was the main distributor for James Brown and family for the West Coast, or so I'm told. Also ran the Music City label that did the Darondo 45 among many others. One of his warehouses that had sat dormant for many years got bought out about 4 years ago by some dealers.
I actually hardly knew anything about 45s back then. I happened to get a job working for one of the aforementioned dealers right after that whole deal went down, so got to know those titles quite well after many months of data entry. So many amazing records in that haul.... oddly enough the Dorando 45 did not turn up in any quantity worth mentioning. They're still out there somewhere.
I like: Two Things In One - Together Forever (sweet ballad that can be had for cheap) Music City Soul Brothers - Let Our Love Go On (tougher to find) Music City Two In One - Snag Nasty (decent funk, nothing amazing) Obviously Darondo goes without saying. I haven't heard a lot of the other releases on the label though. There's a lot of doo wop and r&b stuff that goes back to the 78 era.
By the way, it must be fun as hell to get all those 45s at once and check 'em all out.
Yeah cool come up. I have snacked on the load before (several times). First time I had Dee Felice, Leon Austin, five royales, Crawford or the famous flames though. Inez Foxx and Otis Clay are such great sides and now I can sell my non mint copies.

The record at which I've been staring with wide-eyed horror for the last week, though, is Florence Farmer's "Living Legend," one of the rarer original James Brown productions, released (in the same sense that one releases a felon) in 1969 or so. A two-part single, with a warbling big-band medley of J.B.'s standards behind Farmer simperingly reading... something that somebody wrote, gee I wonder who. A relatively brief excerpt from part 1:
I know I could never end this story No matter how hard I tried It could last forever and ever Because when you're talking about a man like this You're never reluctant to endeavor We love you, James! This man will never walk alone! We won't let him, As long as there's a human race! Because we have freedom of speech, you know, To which he keeps a tremendous pace Now I've seen so many artists But none with so much finesse No wonder all those girls holler When they see the way he's dressed He designs all his own clothes, you know Did I forget to tell you this is Mr. James Brown? Not funky but gripping all the same. 7 minutes of unending JB nut hugging by Farmer. After she's done you would think that JB was messiah returned. I am putting together a mix of JB productions and will be using this as the interlude piece. Sorry I can't burn vinyl yet. Hope to be up and running soon.

The Florence Farmer is a bit insane and the Gospel cover of "Try Me" is nice. Always loved the Devons 45.
