Not hating, but I've never understood people's love for this movie, I find it pretty hammy. Ben Kingsley's just not scarey.
Well, if you don't see it, you don't see it but I found Kingsley so scary that I felt his horrible presence when he wasn't even on the screen. I thought the story was really good, it went in a lot of different directions, but stayed tight. The monster could have been so cheesy, but it actually worked. The cast was not full of fine young things for a change and everyone came across as natural and believable - really good acting imo. Good female characters and Ian McShane is in it! There's a nice gay sub-lot and it's beautifully shot. One of the best openings for a film as well.

That's fair enough. For me personally I didn't know anything about the film before watching it so had no expectations. Avoiding AYO as much as I can, as soon as Winstone came on the screen in his speedos, gut hanging over his trunks, I was sold on the film.*
While I didn't find Kingsley particularly frightening as such he did make me piss myself laughing about ten times during the movie, helps that I've met many angry midgets very similar to his character in my time. Also, after being absolutely deadened by the slew of tedious Lock Stock style gangster films the whole retired, fat, tanned unpleasantness of the film was a real breath of fresh air.
The Last Detail One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest Satyajit Ray's 'Apu' trilogy. (Ok,Pather Panchali if I have to choose) The Ladykillers (no, not the remake) Some Like It Hot
Touki Bouki Cranes are Flying Five Easy Pieces Fitzcarraldo Andrei Rublev Do the Right Thing Paris, Texas Mean Streets Before Night Falls Naked Shadows (Cassavetes) The Wild Bunch and a billion more
I heart your list. Fitzcarraldo is a brilliant film and Kinski does unhinged better than anyone else. Nosferatu is also great.

*There's no way I could avoid an ayo is there.
Thats possibly the best explanation as to why anyone likes this movie I could hope for.
Winstone is 'the daddy'. In Scum he is really is scarey. I did enjoy the fact that they avoided the obvious in Sexy Beast, like casting Kingsley as a hardman, and Winston as a weaker character.
Innocence Singing in the Rain Rope Night of the Hunter Faat Kine Blood Simple Maelstrom The Devils 1900 Sweet Smell of Success + most of Haneke + Sorcese up to Casino + most of Jarmusch + most of Claire Denis + most of Dario Argento + Moodysson up to Lilya
this is too hard for me to pick one hitchcock movie.

His Films are:
Cache The Time of the Wolf The Piano Teacher Code Unknown The Castle Funny Games The Moor's Head 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance The Seventh Continent
I haven't seen The Castle or The Moor's Head. Seventh Continent and 71 Fragments are my least favourite, a little heavy-handed and melodramatic - he definitely honed his style as he went on imo.
I'ma leave it there for now. But all three of these really amazed me and I have never tired of them. If there's one thing they got in common it is that they are all deeper than they first seem.
its amazing how telling a favorite movie list is about a person.
in no specific order: Raising Arizona Hook People under the Stairs Pulp Fiction I cant think of a Sci fi flick but i saw Blade runner recently and bugged out at the last 5-10 minutes of the film.
