This is a lot more than a cover variation, this is a totally different record mix-wise. All of the energy that people claim Williams is lacking on the regular issue LP has been re-inserted on this here bad boy. A cheap way to get the idea is to play the Duplex 45 issue of "Funky Superfly" next to either the Rew or MVTH 45 issues. You'll hear how much more serious the Duplex mix is immediately and that's what the entiriety of the Fan Club issue sounds like. Williams got major distribution here in Chicago (REW & MVTH were manufactured here), so you see his 45s very often and the regular LP every once in a while.
There's a few dudes on the Ethiopiques series that sound like James, and bring something different to the table as well. I love those tunes when they're good, because when they're smoking, they burn. 1 T.N.
Miles (Cleret) of Soundway records has just reissued this (1st and 2nd tune) on 45 (mastered from this record. You guys should pick it up.
