From memory Jimmy Hughes' version of 'Try Me' is pretty cool.

  • Bobby Byrd

That Nelson Sanders 45 on LA Beat is pretty JBed out, perhaps the closest I heard to James beside Fields and it's that dope "Cold Sweat" era stuff.

On the track '(Funky) Four Corners' JERRYO does some gunts and 'good god's and then apologizes: 'sorry about that JB'!

Alot of white guys wanted to be JB, most famously Roy Head & Wayne Cochran - also Lindel Hill on "Ain't Got Time." Oh, and James Chance, but he wasn't generally very succesful at it...

Not at all. Decent funk tho, I wouldn't say it SUCKS but it's definitely a record I'm okay owning a repress of.

Plus let me also just say that the LP is genuinely impossibly rare. 45s??? sure. But that LP might as well be a fart in the florida wind. (insert jpeg of a fart in the wind)

that Bobby Williams BLOWS. some of the most bland boring funk ive ever heard. there's no energy in that shit.

That's funny cause I actually had one. Funky Superfly is a pretty radd song. I guess if I was all into the funk 45 sound I'd shit my pants over that, but the whole lp was not all that great.

  • Spitting Image - JB's Latin

This song is completely great, mostly instrumental but lots of JB style grunting and encouragement to the band, which features a killer flute throughout.

Where did you find it, out of curiosity?

Oddly enough, here in OC about 5 years ago.

haha! I bought it for $50 & traded it for about 200 more than that. Perhaps I would like it now...

    Bobby Byrd

    You took mine.

I've always thought the Rocketeers backing tracks to Helene Smith's and Frank Williams's "You Got To Be A Man" versions were straight jacks of "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Great song(s), but it's distracting.

    Wilson Pickett

DEFINITELY NOT. Both men came from the church at around the same time and arrived at the same sound. Wilson is NOT a late-blooming imitator.

Rickey Calloway, "Tell me" is a good one. Get the 12 inch reissue on Kay-Dee records, Keb Darge and Kenny Dopes label. Kenny Dope did a real job on that one.

There's a few dudes on the Ethiopiques series that sound like James, and bring something different to the table as well. I love those tunes when they're good, because when they're smoking, they burn.

I always though Reid had a very distinctive style...

and his ballads incredibly beautiful falsetto stuff. "Treat Me Right" etc.

  • I prefer otis reddings "papa's got a brand new bag", otis aint no wannabe though.

    Great 45, and inexplicably plentiful...

    Second 45 is cool too...
