Is it a legitimate creative tool or a cheap way to capitalize on humanity's collective longing for a "religious experience?"

    Depends on the depth of the echo and how well it is done. It can be a creative tool in some aspects, other times it is as you put it, a cheap way. I don't know about capitalizing.

    If anything, use reverb, or that fish slab echo.
