MR MAGIC

"Supa Rockin" Mr. Magic's Rap Attack Friday, August 18th, 6pm - 7pm on Aircheck Starting in 1979, in post-disco New York City, the Rap Attack was the the first blast of rap radio to ever hit the dial. Paying for his own time-slot to broadcast from WHBI's basement studio on Riverside Drive before moving to WBLS in 1982, Mr. Magic blew up the careers of countless MCs worth their weight in 10K gold chains: Kurtis Blow, Whodini, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Starski, Afrika Bambaataa, Run DMC, and LL Cool J to name a few. With the Juice Crew in the house and Marley Marl in his "mixing gloves" ready to "wax, buff, and simonize," the Rap Attack was also a blistering battlefield for many rap rivalries: the infamous "bridge wars" between KRS-One and MC Shan, the Real Roxanne vs. Roxanne Shante, Grandmaster Flash vs. Melle Mel, and Kiss FM vs. WBLS ("I'll smack that lipstick off your radio!"). Listen up fly guys and fly girls! This was just archived on WFMU:http://www.wfmu.org/

Mr. Magic (NYC, rap attack wbls) - Legendary radio dj, breaking classic records, put on Marley Marl, spearheaded the juice crew, probably made your favorite rappers favorite rapper want to rap, etc., etc. undeniably more important. this should be obvious to anyone who has more than a passing interest in hip hop.

Mr. Magic (New Haven, stones throw compilation dude) - Marginal local artist who's mostly been recently canonized because he made a few decent records that a few tastemakers latched on to. His appeal is mostly limited to obsessive historians and those who fetishize "raer disco rap" without really caring about the larger picture. (And I guess some New Haven folks too) I mean, I do kinda like his records, but come on now, it's no contest.

    of course, i personally prefer

That cut is on the flip to "Crack it Up"... I believe it's called "Bellevue Patient" and on it he describes raping a cop!

In his defense I think Pookey's talking about one of the Mr. Magic LP's that most of the Third Unheard comp is culled from. I remember Dooley got sealed copies of all of that stuff when they were putting 3rd together but the titles escape me. They're kinda on an extended 12"/EP/compilation type steez moreso than an album.

Just stop posting. Seriously, dude. You are exactly what's wrong with online discussions of rap.

Yes. I know that. Still I didn't say anything wrong because I was talking about the stones throw compilation dude. Hence "the other mr. magic is much cooler". And my reply to the Earth Break re-issue 12".
I hope ya'll don't think I mean that he is more notable or influential than the original one. I also didn't state that his LP is the rarest rap record. Check question marks.

    peace.

  • Ok. I am sorry if my swearing was coming out offensive, but his statement makes no sense. I didn't say anything wrong or incorrect. and once again? haha no, I know what I'm talking about. Sounded like he was trying to make fun out of me or diss me.
