Yeah, that shits straight up heat. See it around the traps for $15-20, when fools be picking up some weak shit for $100.... DAMN! don't sleep... This shits gunna start blowin' up now cuz of the strut, ebay your 2nd copy now!
peace.
YEP it is the real deal, if you aint got this go get it (fast), this shit is the shit, OK the art direction kinda fucked the cover up a little bit, too dark...(I like it anyway),... and then Donald Byrd did come out with one of the dopest (Blue Note) covers in the Mizell era, the Street Lady gatefold (is a killer!). Back to Ethiopian Knights(1971), that joint shoould be more pricey, its so nice... side A starts out with open fender basslineheat(Wilton Felder), midtempo funkgroove(15min) with another crusader Joe SAMPLE on keys, plus alot of other dope players (Bobby Hucherson). Side B (naturally) starts out with ooopen drum beats and gangster rolls, Felder laying down the GANGSTERbassline, straightup HEAT ! once again funkgroove(17min) (slower tempo) wah wah stylee, Harold Land on tenor (cant front!)... I found my copy years ago in a little store on the westside, still in orig shrink mint vinyl ooof, I have so much love for this record ! NUFF SAID... peace-
soulful strings and the ashby cadets were both done by richard evans.
who did the j. gardner? that had to be stepney..
he also arranged electric mud, possibly that howlin wolf??
j. gardner? if you mean joann garrett, that was andre williams.
other notable stepney: minnie riperton "come to my garden". inner grt gatefold has one of the only pictures i've seen of him.
Here's one other:
that's the one from the gatefold(with ramsey & minnie cropped out).
-his daughter is on the rotary connection "songs" cover.
and charles himself is on the back cover of the self-titled first album (i think he's the sorta heavy-set black guy, as opposed to the skinnier one - that was sidney barnes)
(now that i think about it, he's probably on the cover of HEY LOVE by the New Rotary Connection as well - there's a guy in a sweater vest and golf shirt looks just like him)

Chicago had some great producers.
Someone asked if disco horns is what was meant by "over produced". For me no.
Rudy Van Gelder's fame comes from capturing the natural sound of performances.
Charles Stepney's fame came from adding unusual instruments, arrangements and effects.
Thus RVG's production is minimal and CS is over. I think they are both great.
Lots of disco horn bands were recorded more of less how they sounded on stage, KC, Brass Construction...
