I saw it last night (with a girl!) I think it was great-so great I'd probally see it again. There's a lot of things I found enjoyable about the film: The orginality in the humor, the premise , Jack Black's performance, the characters etc...

IT'S THE GREAT LATINO EPIC! (Even though the lead dude isn't Latino-but plays a convincing one).

It's really just a very likeable and funny film.

  • I generally don't want to see some white butthole imatating a mexican. actually i never want to see that.

it's decent, at least as a rest from the "not another teen movie garbage"... that said, the director was the same guy that did "Napoleon D", so add Jack Black into the mix and some good character actors and yup - plus a good "Tenacious D" moment as well ...

    Vote for ESCALITO!!!!

I hate Napoleon Dynamite, but I love Tenacious D. I don't mind racialist humor (I think Ali G and Southpark and Dave Chapelle are hillarious). Should I see this in the theater or wait for Netflix?

  • Young_PhonicsYoung_Phonics 8,039 Posts
That's interesting the race was brought up. I'd like to think I'm pretty aware when it comes to race, especially the way latinos are depicted, in films and I didn't really find anything bad about Jack Black's performance. Maybe because it was a comedy and pretty much every actor in the film was latino (to my knowledge).

and yo..in the story Nacho's Mother is a Danish Missionary who marries his father, a mexican misionary. It wasn't like they skirted past the issue in the film.

It's way better than Napolean Dynamite (which I thought was just okay).

Decent point. Nice save? There are plenty of "white" Mexicans. Hell, there are even Chinese Mexicans. Still not interested.

hate hate hate hate hat...grumble grumble

Here I come with the opposite.

I saw it the other day, granted had no idea the napoleon dynamite team was associated. *IMO Napoleon Dynamite is one of the worst films I've ever seen.* Came in with low expectations, but the movie was actually incredible. Thoroughly funny throughout. If your easily offended by anything stereotypical, then it aint for you. I'm not, so I thought it was hot. Also the music was pretty on point, lots of strange 70's mexican movie music. There was this incredible funk song during the training scene I was hyped to catch the end credits to see what that was. But then forgot to check before I left. I also heard Os Mutantes Batmacumba. Anyways, Jack Black is no doubtly annoying most of the time. This is really one of the only roles I liked him in. His spanish is surprisingly alot like Antonio Banderas. It's worth seeing in the theatres just for the knife fight scene.

I noticed in one commercial they have a Ugly Custard tune! is it in the movie?

I for one cannot wait to see it...this might be strange, whenever I hear of someone positively HATING a movie, I have to see it..I mean, if it stirs up such a strong emotion/opinion in someone, then there has to be something to it. But aside from that, I liked Napoleon Dynamite...I loved the way it looked, the way it was shot...I thought it was interesting movie making.

By the way here is a short list of movies I FUCKING HATED... if you are of like curiosity in the strong opinion, gotta see it camp.

    21 grams
    Constatine
    Stigmata

probably the worst 3 movies ever made IMO.

Whoa I liked 21 Grams and Constantine (although it was cheesy at times). Never saw Stigmata.

You need to see more films then. There's level of suckitude far, far below the line you just drew. Not that any of those three films were somehow "good" (though personally, I found "Constantine" entertaining enough).

I dont think so, I have watched a lot of movies, a lot...a bad movie made by a no name directors, with no name actors, is a far more forgivable sin than a film like "21 grams", which is supposed to be a "good film"(I call it good because it was a critical fave) but lacks essential devices such as character development, creating a sympathy with said characters...there was nothing to care about any of those characters, one could give a shit what happened to them...nothing of interest in the any characters AT ALL. One of many bad things about that "good" movie. So what was the point of the movie? To me that is much worse filmaking than a throw away bad comedy like Cadyshack2 or a Jamie Kennedy movie. Something of that caliber. That is why I put "21 grams" at the top of that list.
As far as Constatine, it was a comic book movie that made the comic (something I have never read) seem like a pretentious hunka crap also. I doubt it is a bad as a comic as the movie made it seem, but that is kinda my point...it was so bad it made its source material unappealing. Kinda like a horable version of a cover song is usually always worse than a bad original song. Its in the delivery. I feel like they are prime examples of bad filmaking IMO. I stand by my choices.

Then you should steer waaaay clear of Robby Benson's catalogue:

Walk Proud (1979) - plays a LA Latino gangster
The Chosen (1981) - plays a Brooklyn Hasidic Jew

21 grams was a total bite off of Amores Perros, a much better film. I still liked 21 though.

On a much broder note, who can afford to go to movies? For 10 clams my optic nerve better be so overexcited that my eyeballs fall out. Netflix or rent is how I roll...I do miss that buttery popcorn though. I heard that some theaters even let you but on your own "butter flavoring".

yes, save yourself the unwanted memories, do not see this movie if the fans alone are already annoying you. it's just as bad if not worse than you expect. ok, hatting over.

i still might watch nacho libre on hbo in a year stoned out of my mind and bored on a thursday night. maybe.

Close, but the worst movie ever is MI2

Nacho was tears in my eyes funny. The final smackdown at the end was great. The music was great (Esquievel, Mutantes, Mariachi music). The filmaking was improved over Nap Dyn.. the mormon director dude is really biting Wes Anderson harder in this one which.. works for me.

If you did not find Nap-D funny then I doubt you will find this funny.

    SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

GET THAT CORN OUTTA MY FACE!!

I don't really get the Napoleon Dynamite hate either... I really enjoyed that movie, thought each dialogue was quotable and funny. I also really loved the photography of the movie (which is quite amazing as it's been shot quickly for like nothing and that was one of the first movie of Jon Heder ; I guess he did pretty much everything on his movie).

Well, Alejandro Gonz??lez Inarritu used the same "people crossing people's lives, then meeting up again" in those two movies, that doesn't make 21 Grams and Amores Perros the same movies at all, and such things could then be said to whatever movies that uses the same twist (Short Cuts, Magnolia, Crash, ... ; all excellent movies btw).

And 21 Grams is a brilliant movie, with moving characters (imo). If you're not touched by them, go see King Kong !

really, you thought they were moving? I thought every character was a self centered, piece of shit human being. I could have cared less if they got sawed in half in front of their children. Really. IMO.
