"Everything is Everything"
"Doo Woop"
"How Many MC's"
"Lost One"
Lady of Rage "Afro Puffs"
Yo Yo "You Can't Play with my Yo Yo"
This would be the answer if the question were asked on MTV in 1992.
Might as well throw in Nikki D
don't forget Shut the Eff Up, Hoe!
best scratch-in ever?
hot-hot damn hoe/sh-shut the fuck up!
Don't for get "Monie in the Middle" which would have been a good sitcom name, oh wait, nevermind.
also Gangsta Boo, La Chat, Trina, Missy, Shawnna, Remy Ma, Ms Jade, Heather B, and of course aformentioned mc lyte, ladybug, bahamadia, lady of rage, etc.
Besides the already mentioned (Lyte, Shant??, Lauryn) I really like
- Antoinette "I Got An Attitude"
- Ice Cream Tee "Keep Hushin'" + "A New Revolution"
Right now I'm listening a lot to "Fatal Attraction" from Shant??'s otherwise patchy "Bad Sista" album. I really dig the Marley Marl production on that one and the funny storytelling is one some Lorena Bobbitt-style vengeance:
"Well this story has such a sad ending
And I hope these men stop pretending
As if they're single and try to mingle
Cause one day you might feel a tingle
Between your legs and when you look down and check
Aaaah - surprise, go ahead and break your neck.
Search high and low, look near and far
But what you're looking for is somewhere in a pickle jar
Just like him, cause he's in a hospital
He had a big one, but now it's kind of little
So little, he can't stick it any place
He tried to play me, but he lost the race
But that's not all that he lost
Jimmy's gone and that's the course of my fatal attraction"
Ouch.
And although people view her as more of a style bringer than a "good" MC, you'd have to put some Missy in the mix. Y'all can say what you want about her "mic skillz" - her catalogue is packed with quality hits.
Please point me in the direction of some now/next-generation female MCs that rock (besides Jean Grae/WhatWhat yadayada). We can't keep on mentioning these old mofos everytime this question pops up.
paulette & tanya are the shit!! many claim them as the first female MCs on wax.
just check out this track from 1979... those of you that have never heard of them are gonna wonder how you slept so long...
PAULETTE & TANYA - "Rappin' & Rhymin'" (1979)
Also Rah Digga is straight up fire, Candy Fresh from Atlanta, Icey J from Miami and there are more but I cant remember them right now.
Peace
Hawkeye
Lets see... 10% dis, some other MC lyte songs and.....
probably that new shawna track.
female mc's aint really done all that much worth mentioning.
Not hating, just saying.
Meechie Me(sp?) "Betta run for cover" (still trying to find this joint on vinyl)
Sweet T "It's my beat"
Roxanne Shante (BDK) "Have an ice day" (I think BDK wrote that joint)
- and it's a cool track with historical value, but I wouldn't put it on my favorite list. I don't listen to it very often.
Suga T on Captain Save a Hoe
Heavyweights Volumes 2 & 4
Buddha Nature by Blac Monks
BahamadiaLadybugLady Of RageMedusaLauryn HillShawnnaWinley SistersIsisRoxanne Shanteetc
MC fucking Lyte - "Paper Thin". One of the best hip-hop jams, ever, male OR female. That other shit in this thread isn't even in the same building.
Ladies First - Queen Latifah & Monie Love
and some other dope female jams
You're Going Down - JJ Fad (Shante diss!!! best line - "And The Supersonic Album? Oh it's platinum")
It's My Beat - Sweet Tee
Lighters Up - Lil Kim (but maybe that's just my Brooklyn bias)
Yeah! Candy Fresh swears better than any rapper I know. It's hard to explain for those who haven't heard her, but when she says "fuck you" it's always so well placed and sassy.
I know it's totally a subjective thing and impossible to argue, but this cliche always pops up and it always rubs me the wrong way. It's like people who say "I listen to everything but country". I mean, who can argue with that, I guess, but they both strike me more as automatic, indoctrinated responses rather than observations from those who have taken the time to explore what's out there and to listen without prejudice. Especially given the recent wave of interest in so-called "random rap", I'm surprised more people haven't started to dig deeper in the crates for female MCs and, more importantly, recalibrate the way they appreciate the vast number of gems that are out there.
Dude, your fucking tripping.
