People like Raphael Saadiq; so far he hasn't come up with a really really good album, yet he's able to live of his talent and hard work. He's a session player (don't know if that's the right word) who, as far as I feel, hasn't sold his soul.

  • Hero is a pretty strong word, but I'm really likin' Bill Withers right now. Also on the list are the ususal standard, Curtis, James, Coltrane, Primo before he got cranky, etc, etc, etc.

Heroes? Hmmm. I couldn't call them heroes as much as I would call them inspiration, whether it's their music, their philosophies, or the way they functioned in the music business. With that said:

    John Lennon

    Frank Zappa

    Prince

    Trevor Horn

    Jimi Hendrix

    Jimmy Page

    Miles Davis

    John Coltrane

    Duke Ellington

    Charles Mingus

    Pharoah Sanders

    Herbie Hancock

    Toshiko Akiyoshi

    Gabby Pahinui

    Robert & Roland Cazimero

    Peter Moon

    Ravi Shankar

    Vilayat Khan

    Eddie Bo

    The Neville Brothers

    Captain Beefheart

    Grandmaster Caz

    Grandmaster Flash

    The Residents

    Kirk Hammett

    Scott Ian

    Run-DMC

    Public Enemy

    ======

There are also a lot of people whom I consider contemporaries, be it in music or writing, so to mention some of you who regularly post or lurk would seem like I'm kissing ass. Not heroes, but to say "damn, you're doing your own thing, slow down so I can catch up for a moment".

Pianist, arranger and record producer born in Ottawa, Art (Arthur) Snider studied music with Benny Louis and Phillip Pololiak. He played piano in several dance groups, and in the late 1940s became the manager of numerous artists. He founded the record companies Chateau Records (1957-61) and Sound Canada (1967-81). In 1973, Sound Canada launched its Periwinkle label.

the only "hero" i have is a dude, a scholar, from Senegal. I did a thesis on him, i studied his whole writings, and he "opened" me up. His name is Cheickh Anta Diop.

Most people don't know him, most people that claims to know him really don't, most people that claim to have read his books really didn't, but it's the only valuable Historian that i can name, along with his "protege" Theophile Obenga (who became a politician in his ow country after Diop's death).

That's Alioune Diop besides him (for those who knows Senagal a bit)

He should't be my hero according to some extremist...not because he is Black and i'm White. But because he is the FIRST black African that PUT White People ashamed for the biggest lie of History. Average white man will not accept his works. He will always try to dodge the consequences of the Man's researches. But it's here, in the air, suspended in time. Y'all can read him, but PLEASE PLEASE, make sure you buy the "presence africaine" edition (African Presence). Other versions are wrongly translated from the French. He was writing in French but studied everywhere. He also embodied his own dialect, called Wolof (or valaf in ancient terms). A MUST HAVE on any decent book shelves. If you don't have it, then you can't be my friend.

That's the only hero i have so far...

After that, all the people that i wouold list are either musicians/composers that gives me HIGH AUDIO PLEASURE or people that gives me a reason to live. And i'm nt even sure i can list them in one shot. I would need a week or so.
