So I go into this record store that I banned for the last 8 years because the owner is your typical dickhead. 10 seconds I'm in the store he gives beef to some woman who is looking throgh a crate of records that an other woman brought in to sell. He says "I'll take that" and nabs the record away from her. Next thing you know the woman's husband is giving the owner beef for being such a dick. The owners like "ARE YOU THREATNING ME???" Too clasic. This guy has tons of 45's but you have to give him a list of what you are looking for. He had some lp's lying around. Nothing to spectacular. I ended up walking with..
Peter Tosh - Wanted Dread Or Alive Some reggae comp. called More reggae music had some good tracks on it like Gregory Isaacs - my time Lee Perry produced peter tosh - brand new second hand Yellowman & peter metro - the girl is mine (m. jackson cover) also some John Holt, Clint Eastwood, Augustus Pablo & others
Big Lu Valeny- Los Muchachos Hector Rivera- Lo Maximo Nelson Henriquez- Much Sabor Internacional
Found these three latin records on my dinner-break-dig Friday night. The top two (Big Lu Valeny and Hector Rivera) are sealed...not on any "To crack-or-not to crack type ish," but any info on those? I'll give 'em a listen, but just wanted some background. No info on Big Lu; Hector seems to catch some decent $ on music stack. Will try to post pics, but having trouble making it work.
Bottom one is decent, but the blue vinyl is key. Nice look.
Gentle Giant, Exuma, John Renbourn, Eric Quincy Tate & B.B. Blunder are all promos. B.B. Blunder is funky dirty British rock, also a nice Manu Dibango African piano joint
a couple of nice private joints, Dear When You're Near is tripped out psych from 1973 made by some advertising dudes in their 50's. And some nice garage 45's a big bunch of Badfingers Decembers Children - backwards and forwards Painted Ship - little white lies/frustration The Mystics - hushabye Northwest Company - rock n roll lover man The Music Explosion - sunshine games Marty Wilde - bad boy Tom Northcott - spaceship races Tom Northcott - going down Los Bravos - bring a little lovin' Sagittarius - my world fell down Sagittarius - hotel incident
I love second hand stores that are only open 1 day a week!
ok -- so i went to a local thrift store the other morning and it looked like they just put out a box of mostly new wave/post-punk, art rock, some jazz, hip-hop, soul and punk records. somebody had good tastes up my alley. some old guy was there when i started looking and was all, "what is this stuff? i mean, i know the rolling stones--but this stuff looks WEIRD!" I was going nuts, as almost every record was a winner. and best part -- all the records were half off, which meant they were 25 cents each!
the philip glass 'einstein on the beach' boxset had the ticket stubs, program guides, and even a new york times review from 1984 in it to a nyc event that the person who owned it went to (with a friend i take it). obviously it was a big deal to this person. there was more philip glass records too that i picked up (for resale).
above is common but classic new wave/punk records. mostly to resell.
rare miles lp in that one! i picked up a bunch more common new wave type lps as well as a bunch of rolling stones lps and other stuff for resell.
winner in this one is some obscure synth/punk band called Anti-Matter from 1981. can't find much info on that particular single. think 'no tears' era-tuxedomoon meets early cabaret voltaire. really good.
also, the insanely creepy art linkletter w/ his daughter diane linkletter record. i have a copy of that same single, but on capitol instead of the xian label word--and without the picsleeve (which makes it even more strange). those that do not know the story, diane linkletter committed suicide just a short while after this record was released. i think one of john waters' first short films was about diane linkletter's suicide. the recording is just eerie and strange. a sob story about a runaway teen who ends up hanging out with burnouts and hippies. she writes letters to her parents and they write back to console her saying, "we love you, call collect." the whole thing is narrated by art and diane and they really sound like they are in tears and it just a painful listen. i'm sure wfmu's beware of the blog has a mp3 of it. search it out.
and the rest was for a total of 25 bucks at my friend mark's store (marquise dance hall on grand st. in brooklyn)
12"s include: cd III, candido 'candi's funk/samba funk', and pretty ricky & boo-ski 'dreams'/'it's mine'
and to wrap it up-- i got this little space age/eames era/art deco lamp for a buck at a salvo --
I was feelin' so "woe is me" about my missed opportunity that I completely ignored the fact that I copped some dope records at the usually tame local show today. After listening to records for the last 4 hours, that is no longer the case.
Mitty is the best 2-sider I've heard from her. Cover of Love & Happiness is straightforward, but well done with superb rhythm and horns - flip is a funky instro. Always psyched to grab Bobby Taylor & Spencer Wiggins titles that I don't have. Spencer is kinda rough tho. Wildweeds doesn't stand up to No Good to Cry but one side is a raw heavy track that grew on me quick. Music Machine is post-1st-LP Original Sound 45 of 2 tracks that ended up on the WB "Bonniwell Music Machine" LP - and both are serious
I see that Unifics everywhere, but this one was sealed for $4 so I finally copped it. Some of the Pop stuff is ehh but the soul jawns are legit. Lost Nation is pretty sick prog/psych on Rare Earth from 1970. Shades of POZ in some of the drum action, and if you like Rare Bird (like I do) then this would be for you. Kangaroo is sealed, haven't cracked it yet but it gets mixed reviews from psych heads - supposedly a couple sick tracks but alot of junk too. Les Hou-Lops is Quebec garage, some ill covers like Friday on My Mind and Don't Need No Doctor - and a couple of even better fuzzed out originals. Dude had a few of these to choose from, I think I did ok. Got T-Rex from the $2482 discount VU record guy...I'm feelin' his earlier psychedelic shit kinda more than The Slider stylee right now... Pierre Henry starts your face to melting...

if im not mistaken, thats the 1st smiths 7 and it used to be about an $80 record. maybe still is, i dunno. (this pic is 7"s right?)
your whole post is full of great stuff, nice work!
a book about library records that i picked up at sf moma.
This book has kept me occupied since i got it, it's the perfect tool for passing time if you just want to get some minutes to pass, i can look for days at those covers in there..
Went digging with Fatback in my own storage unit. Still going through WRGW's old records. Will post pics later. Here's some of what I'm keeping from the weekend (BTW the stuff for the shop is just as good):
The Nightcrawlers - Little Black Egg (Kapp) Red Cross - Born Innocent (Smoke 7) OST - Sebastian (Dot) V/A - Hell Comes to Your House (Bemisbrain) The 700 Club - S/T (Slithering Disc) The Underground All-Stars - Extremely Heavy (Dot) Augustus Pablo - Original Rockers (Message) Sugar Minott - Sufferer's Choice (Heartbeat) Effect of Excess - Short-Term Memory (Fresh Sounds) OST - Jud (Ampex) Champion Jack Dupree - Jack and Mickey in Heavy Blues (Sire) Little Walter - Hate to See You Go (Chess) T-Bone Walker - Fly Walker Airlines (Polydor) Mighty Joe Young - Chicken Heads (Ovation) Chris McGregor - Brotherhood of Breath (Neon) Larry Young's Fuel - Spaceball (Arista) Larry Young'S Fuel - S/T (Arista) Lionel Bart - Is This Where We Came In? (Deram) OST - Gordon's War (Buddah)
and 4 from this morning:
Jacob Miller - Natty Christmas (Top Ranking) Chief Controller Olufemi Ajasa and His New Nigerian Brothers Band - S/T (Decca) Ayinde Bakare and the Inner Circle Orchestra - S/T (EMI) Doctor G.O. Fagoke and His Honesty Band - Prayer of the Year Vol. 1 (African Songs Ltd.)
Pete Jolly- Seasons (15bucks for a sealed copy) Merry Clayton- s/t (this is the only record i have of hers, but i'm really feelin' her singing.) Claudine OST (after Drewn's recommendation, i found one today, and yes it's definitely curtis mayfield produced.)
first thing I did was buy out some old store stock...
I guess it pays to be the only dude on the east coast checking for west coast rap... also picked up some quantity of Digital Underground "Sons Of The P" and 415 "Nothin But A Come Up".
plus this GREAT disco 12"
and some dope hip-hop 45s, some of which I have never seen before
the rest of the stuff is combined from shops, dealers, and a record show:
the motel 6 scene. No pics of crackhead party nextdoor unfortunately...

Seriously, I can't fuckin stand insects, why would I want to have those little suckers recorded on wax? What's wrong with collectros?
You will need to ask HCrink
yeah Crink, time to speak up. What is it? Cause unless it is a funky jazz quartet with a mosquito with an afro on Rhodes, I'm not getting it...
