Was having this discussion with a friend the other day and was wondering what everyone else thought. We came up with quite a few i.e. Betty Wright etc... - so I figured people here might be able to put me on to some more obscure (to me anyways) funk 45's that you consider essential but affordable.

    Freda Payne - Unhooked Generation
Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul - So Much Trouble on my Mind (essential!!)
    Nite-Liters - Dreams to Remember
    Miami - Party Freaks
Parliament - Come in out of the Rain
Idris Muhammad - Could Heaven Ever Be Like This (more disco than funk, but cheap and killer)

As if on cue, I just found an awesome record called "Machine Gun" (cover?), heavy dancefloor action with breakdowns... you'll like it

    "Odyssey Group"

Man, I'm losing it. I thought you were asking if it was possibly a cover, and I was trying to point out that perhaps it was a cover of the Commodore's "machine gun". Maybe you were asking about an album cover, though. I dunno, like i said, i'm losing it. Too many Leffe's here in London.

  • Even more embarassingly, I can't recall the Commodores jam. But pretty sure it's a cover of it. Too much doubles of "Assembly Line"...

This record shouldn't be in this thread though, it's neither essential nor affordable

    And that's the bottom line.

  • jodi gales - you gotta push $10

I finally found that the other day, took me forever.

    I'd add:

Ripple - I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky/Willie Pass the Water
Soul Seachers - We The People
Bobby Powell - Peace Begins Within
Alvin Cash - Keep On Dancin'

and hell, I'd even throw in an extra-cheap

Commodores - I Feel Sanctified (sounds sweet on 45)

  • Here's a few more....

    Jungle Fever- Chakachas
    Tropical- African Music Machine
All The Way Down- Etta James

I actually have a handful of stock copies if anyone needs one.

We might as well just say all Ripple and Soul Searchers... beginner staples...

And there's several Syl Johnson's too...

Bobby Powell - Peace Begins Within

Pretty sure this is a great two-sider, though I can't remember what the flip is...

    Also:

Ike & Tina: Bold Soul Sisters (blue thumb) a $2 record that will just tear your speakers apart

  • Thanks for all the suggestions - I have quite a few of them but there were alot that I didn't.

If you like funky 70s soul, then find a copy of
Sebastian Williams - Get Your Point Over (Ovide)

brilliant tune that shouln't set you back more than $10.
But if you see it for double, buy it anyway.

'Peace Begins Within' - what a fucking tune.
Who needs rare with tunes like this?

  • James Brown

some JB 45s for step 1

    +

    Meters singles

    =

    Essentials

and it doesn't hurt that most are real cheap.

You're Losing Me - Ann Sexton

    Party Power - Junior Wells

    Mighty Mighty - Baby Huey

Keep It Coming - Denise Lasalle

  • nothing too new here, but i'd add that most of the charles wright + watts 103rd st rhythm band singles are both inexpensive and around - and the guitar at the end of "do your thing" is rather .

You can find this at an affordable price? This is more like a $40+ single when I've seen it.
