I just saw an ad for a benefit he was scheduled to be at, honoring Stevie Wonder.
DCdigga told me this weekend Rawls was in a bad way....this is sad news for sure.

Peace go with you, Mr. Rawls.

If anyone wants to write a memorial post for Soul-Sides.com (with songs if you like), I'd welcome the contribution.

    PM me.

    RIP.

I'm playing your BOMB version of For What Its Worth man.

  • Oooh, You'll never find, as long as you live
Someone who loves you tender like I do
You'll never find, no matter where you search
Someone who cares about you the way I do

Whoa, I'm not braggin' on myself, baby
But I'm the one who loves you
And there's no one else, no-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh one else

You'll never find, it'll take the end of all time
Someone to understand you like I do
You'll never find the rhythm, the rhyme
All the magic we shared, just us two

Whoa, I'm not tryin' to make you stay, baby
But I know some how, some day, some way
You are (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss my lovin' (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss my lovin' (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss, you're gonna miss my lo-o-ove

Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh (you're gonna miss my lovin')
Late in the midnight hour, baby (you're gonna miss my lovin')
When it's cold outside (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss, you're gonna miss my lo-o-ove

You'll never find another love like mine
Someone who needs you like I do
You'll never see what you've found in me
You'll keep searching and searching your whole life through
Whoa, I don't wish you no bad luck, baby
But there's no ifs and buts or maybes

You're gonna, You're gonna miss (miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss my lovin' (you're gonna miss my lovin')
I know you're gonna my lovin' (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss, you're gonna miss my lo-o-ove

Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh (you're gonna miss my lovin')
Late in the midnight hour, baby (you're gonna miss my lovin')
When it gets real cold outside (you're gonna miss my lovin')
I know, I know that you are gonna miss my lo-o-ove

Let me tell you that you're gonna miss my lovin'
Yes you will, baby (you're gonna miss my lovin')
    When I'm long gon
I know, I know, I know that you are gonna miss my lovin...

RIP Mr. Rawls. Your shell might be gone but your music will live on.

This might seem corny, but my first introduction to Lou Rawls was

listening to the songs from the Garfield cartoons on TV as a little kid.

I remember thinking: who is this guy singing?

My mother told me who it was, and that voice has been in my mind garden ever since.

"Southside Blues/Tobacco Road" from the live album is on the platter while I'm writing this.

    Unfadeable.

  • RIP one of the greatest soul singers of all time.

At least he's not suffering anymore, his medical problems late in life were very serious.
    Rest at last.

    This is nuts.

He was just singing the national anthem for our White Sox. Hard to believe somebody can go so soon.

R.I.P. to a man with an authentic voice and a class apart from everyone else.

    RIP. The man was real.

When I first met my to-be-future-wife, this was the song that was playing the first time we kissed.

People forget that even though he was L.A.-based, he was Chicago-born, and often repped the Chi in his monologues. "Tobacco Road" was written by a Nashville songwriter (the great John D. Loudermilk), but Lou made it an anthem for ghettos all over the world, combining urban despair with grim determination (to get the hell out, then come back and help others out). R.I.P.

I remember seeing dude at a Tower of Power concert like 5 years ago. He was very short statured but what an incredible voice. He even went onstage and sang with them a couple songs, which made that concert go from to

  • RIP. I had the great pleasure of seeing him at a supper club here in DC back in 88 or 89 and he tore it up. A total pro with a God given voice.
