we've had this conversation before but yeah i still havent even managed to listen to this all the way through.. how???why???? i loved sung tongs.
sounds waaaaaay too much like david baker mercury rev for me to get comfy with this joint.
whatever dude you listen to bloc party. ha
yeah i definitely see the mercury rev comparison... sonically it is in that zone for sure. honestly i guess just knowing those guys and the way they work through their ideas is really inspiring for me. they are making exactly the records they want to make and know perfectly how to get where they are going without being too process-based or contrived at all. and once you get past those first couple 'rock' songs, when the album really starts to open up - 'bees' and 'banshee beat' especially - i just hear this perfect synthesis of everything they've been trying to get across in the past 7, 8 years and it just gels. but i completely understand someone not taking to this, especially if you're looking for that almost pastoral vibe of sung tongs.
When I read the best Hiphop-albums thread, I thought "Wow, it's been a slow year for hiphop". Turns out it was a slow year for music, period. Or maybe it's because the album format is being threatened, in our time.
Probably my favorite non-hip hop musical moment of the year was seeing the Boredoms. I had been waiting over 10 years to catch them live and they were even better than I thought they'd be.
Yeah man, he & Zeb are incredible. Wonderwheel is a fantastic label.. Waiting for a Haaksman & Haaksman album...
Didn't you find the BOC just a tad, well, just a little sleepy... I did think it was a bit samey. I liked, but didn't feel it was anything different... But Alice & QSO, no problems with those choices. Top stuff.
well, i usually do listen to boards of canada before i go to sleep, but overall i really liked the album. i think it was more consistent than geogaddi but the best tracks on geogaddi were probably better than the best tracks on this one. if that makes sense..
I'd have to say one that I've been coming back to more and more recently is the Coral's invisible invasion. All the psych heads on this board would be advised to give it a whirl. It's got a strong Portishead connection, so perhaps i'm a tad regionally biased on that.
Others I've enjoyed are:
Gang of four - return the gift (kinda new) A bootleg CD of Artic Monkeys demo's, singles etc I liked that Bloc Party too, but listened to the remixes more recently The Maximo Park joint was okay, but wears a bit thin Sigur ros new lp is ok, but perhaps a bit too likely to be described with epithets such as 'etherial' and 'interesting' to be genuinely enjoyable.
absolutely and without question KELLY CLARKSON breakaway is the best album of 2005. honorable mention is MICHAEL BUBLE' it's time(big up david foster real producerz know the deal). peace, stein. . .
i wasnt checking for a lot of new music this year but heres 10

jackson - smash
deerhoof - green cosmos
alice coltrane - translinear light
islaja palaa aurinkoon
holy fuck - st

So, no love for Fiona Apple then?
Two i can think of that i did like:
* Tin Hat Trio - Book of Silk
* Madeline Peyroux - Careless Love
* Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow
... and i though that "music is my art" comp on ubiquity was pretty good.
