It's been a while since I have posted on the Strut, but I wrote an article last month on the Black Jazz masters being for sale over at my site Flea Market Funk. Since I wrote the article, I have been contacted by CEO of Black Jazz James Hardge. I did a follow up today in light of some e-mails that were sent to me.

Something that's unclear to me about all this is that dude appears to be selling (and indeed may have already sold) many of the individual masters back to the artists or to anyone else willing to pay the asking price. While I'd hesitate to describe this as "asset-stripping", it does seem to me that if the most desirable parts of the company have already been flogged off, the asking price for the remainder of it ought to be adjusted accordingly.
Love or hate the label, it's a shame to see the musical testaments of Chester Thompson, Doug Carn, Rudolph Johnson and others being represented in such a careless manner. Imagine pouring your soul and talent into some recordings only later to have them become an internet doo-doo frisbee.

of the master. You will own the artwork the physical masters. You will be
able to press cd's 180gram Vinyl. Upload the music to all digital sights
and collect revenue.
I will still control the brand name and the logo. But you will be granted
the permision to put the master out in it's orginal album cover with the logo.
On the back of the cd or lps it have of course your name and company
logo.
I have some back stock I will give to you as well call me and let me know
if this deal works for you. I also have the masters to 6 rare Strata East titles
that I want to license not sale.

mr hardge, are you the guy who sold these black jazz reissues on ebay several years ago, but ended up with dozens and dozens of negative feedback comments?

props to you for keeping calm and reasonable during that nonsense. i would've lost my fucking rag dealing with that moron.
the whole thing seems to be a cluster f*ck, i only thought it would be cool to see them reissued legitimately as a label if done properly. i know that a lot of people think Black Jazz is a tepid turd, but i still think historically the label was cool. as far as all the wheelings, dealings, and rants...if a company like numero passes, there must be some issues.

If I was paying $185,000 for anything, I'd want to know exactly what I was getting for my money via a full and detailed breakdown of the assets being offered. I know personally of two recent instances where majors - outfits with the resources to do proper due diligence on a deal - got their fingers burnt when they discovered only after the paperwork was signed and the money paid that what they'd actually bought wasn't what they thought they were buying.
This is very interesting, all though I don't know the owner of
Black Jazz.. What I can say is I see a person trying to sell
something. What's so interesting is all of the none buyers
are attacking this guy.
It is my understanding that Soul Strut is for communicating buyers
and sellers together. Honestly you all know one another and your
just ganging up on him.
Mr. Hardge I like the way that your are handling these people,
it's really funny. Their playing right into your hands by making
mockery of themselves.
