Listening to local talk radio on the way to work this morning a professor was on proposing that we need a "wealth ceiling" that didn't allow any one individual to have more than $10 million in "total wealth". I'm not sure how he wants to measure 'total wealth" but I am curious to see if any of you folks think the concept of having a 'wealth ceiling" was a good one?

Yeah, that'll happen. However, as someone without $10+ million in wealth, I support this.

This isn't directed at you, Rock...but most importantly, we need a pompous, arrogant asshole ceiling.

I think this would be a very good idea.

But McCarthy would be spinning in his grave. Sounds like Communism, let alone Socialism. If something as reasonable as affordable health care has spawned a movement as rabid, ill-informed, and downright selfish as the Tea Party, what the hell would a wealth ceiling do? I think you'd have your civil war right there.

It would be Christmas and New Year's all rolled into one for the Swiss and the Caymans. Like the wealthy don't already have enough incentives to hide their money.

I support a wealth ceiling in the form of an inheritance act.
I also support an income ceiling in the form of an income tax.

FDR, I heard, proposed a cap on income of $25,000.
It was his idea to tax income over that amount at 100%.
The amount that congress settled on was 93% over $25,000 (about $500,000 today.)

I think a return to those kinds of tax rates is necessary to balance the budget.

Disclaimer, I am also a socialist.

The government can do it. Every year you show up and pay a living tax of $50,000 or you get discontinued, a la Solient Green. As less poor people put demands on the system, the tax could come down, until eventually there would be no poor people and no need for the tax.

You would still need the tax to bailout the financial institutions.

You're right. The government would probably just screw it up, and it would end up costing more to kill someone than to just let them keep sponging off the current system.

The poor tread water. The rich are the sponges, depleted the poors' ability to merely tread water.

But hey, it's fun to pretend to be rich by playing apologist/cheerleader for their gluttony.

If the sponges soak up enough of the water it won't be deep enough to tread.

As someone with a little over $10mil in assets I find this abhorrent.

Terrible idea. Rich people would leave and tax revenue would plummet.
