    tough one
the good ones have nice design/colours, but the social stigma associated with it is heavy
i have an ill green one that has not left closet for almost 10 years
it's harder for caucasians to pull off without looking like a florida retirement dude

    yay

I havent found any I dig here in memphis, but they are a good summertime look IMO. One day I will find some that suit me.

They're like paisley shirts - a good one is killer but most are garbage.

I found an amazing paisley in the thrift here in Wellfleet last year. I don't wear it often, but I get like a dozen compliments every time I do.

The nicer ones of this brand that fit you right, yes...

    Otherwise, probably no.

I picked up lots back when nice silk ones were easy to find in thrifts and hard to find in the stores.
Still have many nice ones, but they don't look so good on old guys so I wear rarely.

    yep
calling them hawaiian shirts makes you sound white as hell

  • In the '90s when all things 50s and exotica were hype, I started collecting them.

As far as Magnum PI 80s-to now represses, mega-mega NAY. Super wack styles.

I say YAY for truly vintage Aloha Shirts. I'm talking cotton only, made in the islands.

They were cool as a younger man, but yeah, after 35 not so much.

Can yall breakdown why a tanned cool old man in nice shorts and "sandals" cant rock that shit?

Scarface and Magnum pi arent 20 year olds

i couldnt fathom rockin them w jeans or pants.

    .

I said I was picking up silk ones, and I do have some silk ones, but what I looked for most was rayon.
I also have nice cotton ones.

  • hawaiian shirts? maybe for you, but definitely not for me.

i will also be making a joke about anyone wearing one who isn't in the act of being on vacation.

    CoSign.

Old white dudes with grey pony-tails are the main perpetrtators of this look where I live.

Damn, 374 shirts in the active rotation. I'd probably lean toward nay but also evaluate shirts and how dudes are rocking them on a case-by-case basis. It's a tough look to pull off, but it can be done.

It's a nice curveball here and there when the weather is just so. But it has to be a killer shirt, no jeans, go with shorts, and sandals are ideal, but the right boat shoes or good canvas joints would work too. The right hat seals the deal, but tread lightly.

    Kindly,

just like anything, it's all about WHICH hawaiian shirt youre talking about.
Fist and foremost it should have a really unique color and pattern:

also... a lot of the vintage hawaiians are made from a textile unique to the islands called barkcloth. they really havent made them from that since the early 80s. i wouldnt take any hawaiian shirt seriously thats not the real deal.

other things that you should look for are collar (a lot of vintage ones have obnoxious collars), sleeve width (slimmer the better), and the straight bottom. (i hate these)
